June and July rain in Switzerland?
 

So......we have only been in Bernese Oberland once before in June/July.....is this year unusual? Four out of seven days very rainy, now in Lucerne, still rainy. I see there has been a large system over most of Europe. If we come back next year, would later in July be better? (on average) I know Autumn can be better, but that is out of the question for us next year.

No, it's not unusual. I'd say it is a typical summer (or whatever it is :-) )

June, July and August are the months with the most rainfall on average in (central) Switzerland with around 15 - 17 rainy days in a month. The weather might bet better if you're closer to the mountains but also no guaranty there. It's western Europe, the Atlantic is close and you have the Alps, so it might change anytime.

You'll never know what you'll get, it can be sunny and hot as 32° but also rainy at 12° like the last days.

Not unusual at all. A shower can well last a fortnight - any time in summer. Predictions are impossible. According to traditional weather rules June was especially notorious for lots of rain on the northern side of the Alps, but with global warming and climate change the unpredictable weather conditions in the mountains have become even less predictable. The risk is just the same in July or August. You have to take the risk and hope for good luck, no matter when.

Thanks, we did have a good time and did do some hiking in light rain, but disappointing to not see the mountains as much as we have in the past. However the wild flowers were glorious.

I'll post this question on another thread, I read that the Dolomites are a little drier, might they be a better choice next year late June, early July?

Not really by a large margin. It's usually not raining there that many days in a row, but the chance of showers/thunderstorms in the (early) afternoons is higher.
