June 2 closings in Rome?
We will be in Rome on June 2 which is Ascension Day. I have been unable to determine what's open, what's closed on this day. Even if businesses and historical sites are closed, I assume the churches would be open. Anyone know?

This year, Ascension is also on Republic Day, but that's just means more parades! The churches on the whole are open and have special services in some, even the Vatican Museums are open, but St Peter's may close earlier to the public for services, so don't schedule any sightseeing inside on that day.
There is, from what I know, a parade along via Imperiali, between Pz Venezia and the Colosseum, the road that runs between the Roman Forum and Trajans Forum. There are usually viewing stands set up along the paths here, in case you see them a few days before. Other than that, most businesses and other sites (Colosseum, etc) should be open. Check specific website to ensure they haven't decided to alter opening hours on this day.

I've had the same concerns, but I've been reassured that Republic Day isn't that significant a holiday. Mainly a day off for office workers. There may be some Italian workers who build a long weekend around it because June 2 is a Thursday but shouldn't have a big effect.
As mentioned above, church hours might be tricky because it's also Ascension Day so there will be special Masses. Which could also be interesting!
The parade will problably make it very difficult to cross the Via dei Fori Imperiali and snarl traffic quite a bit in the area of the Forum and Colosseum.

We were recently in Rome for their Unification Day, Easter Sunday and Labor Day. The only difference we noticed was there were less buses and metro trains running. It wasn't a problem, just waited a bit longer for transportation.
