July 5 Czech Holiday -- any impact to travelers?

Janis suggested I re-do my inquiry with a more meaningful title -- always happy to take a good suggestion!

Here's my question:

I have just learned on this board that the day we plan to arrive in Prague -- July 5, 2004 -- is a national holiday.

Can anyone tell me what activities or services might be curtailed that day? I'm particularly concerned that the transit system might be on a limited schedule or not operating at all, and I'd counted on using trams and buses to get to our B&B, rather than one of the much-maligned local taxis.

Any insights to offer?

Many thanks

Hi fritzrl- I'm actually headed to Prague next week, and have been doing quite a bit of looking on the web for info. I saw that several people on old Fodor's threads recommended the following car service to/from the airport, and I just booked them myself: http://www.prague-airport-shuttle.com/ I noted that their website only discussed the Christmas/New Years holidays as being ones where they charge more, and I think that their prices seem reasonable, as some have told me that you'll pay more to go directly to your hotel (rather than just getting droppped off at Wenceslas sq., for ex.). I can tell you how they are when we return... Good luck, and happy travels!

Thanks, AHaugeto!

Enjoy your trip -- I'm envious that you're going so soon and that I have to wait another few months.

I'd be interested in any observations you have!

The public transportation will run on July 5th. Museums will be closed, however. July 6th is also a holiday, if I am not mistaken. Most tourist trap places will be open. Even the castle might be open, since it is such a main attraction. I would ask your hotel or booking agency what will definitely be open/closed. I've been in the country several times during those holidays, and I've never had a big problem getting around on those dates.

I had also plans to go in early July
but a friend told me that alot of places could be close on the 5th and
6th , so I change my itinerary. If you
have the chance try to do the same, but
if everything is already booked than
do not ruin your trip, just use does 2 days to see the city all the beautiful
architecture the parks etc.. I'm pretty
sure anyways that being in the very
beginnig of the tourist season they'll
have some tourist sites open.
Have fun and let us know.I'm going first to Budapest and the 8th to Prague.
