I probably wasn't paying attention in school many years ago when they mentioned Guy Fawkes. My lack of knowledge of him caused a little stir at a pub in Scotland many years later. I was having a few pints and chatting up the locals when one of the town fathers mentioned Guy Fawkes and when I asked who he was, I proceded to get a friendly and spirited lesson on the his escapades.

Indeed: "Please to remember the 5th of November with gunpowder treason and plot.
"I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot."
Takes me back to the year I spent in England -- 3 years old -- in 1955-56.
They still asked for a "penny for the guy" then -- and built big bonfires.

In an era when we constantly free real criminals because the evidence against them was unsafe, let's not forget that the evidence against Guy Fawkes et al is all based on confessions extracted under torture (look at his handwriting before and after interrogation).
In any civilised court (but then we were ruled by a Scottish king...) the case would have been thrown out.
Justice for the Westminster 13!
Guy Fawkes was innocent. OK?
