JFK-How early should we get there?

Anyone fly from JFK lately? We have an 8:30 AM flight to London. With th new security measures how early should we arrive? Haven't flown since August...what should we expect to go through at the airport? Thanks in advance for you help.

Hi rb - - from another rb

It seems so hard to predict to me. You might think that big airports are slower, but I just flew to Los angeles and back - - a solid hour in the security line in Columbus (and it looked just as bad this morning when I got back) - - I almost missed my plane, outbound. But LAX was scarcely more than 10 minutes last night - - perhaps because it's a little more decentralized.

And I encountered shot lines at my ticket counters everywhere - - but saw other airlines with very long kines - - so it's quite a crap shoot.

I'd say arrive by 6:30. After all, you don't have many (any?) other morning departure options, right?

Best wishes,

Rex
Would December be considered recently? Both my flights left from JFK.

One was an international flight - my first after 9/11. I believe it had been suggested to arrive 3 hours in advance. My flight was at 5:45 - traffic was moderate, if I remember correctly. Went through 3 security checks pretty quickly and wound up sitting in the lounge for at least 2 1/2 hours. Second flight was domestic - Jet Blue. Decided to leave my apartment a bit later - flight was at 6:30, near Christmas time so traffic was heavy. When I got to the airport I had about 1 hour before my flight. Went through security pretty quickly, once again. Only had to wait about 30 minutes.

I just flew out of JFK to Rome. The line before you even got into the airport doors was 20 people deep. They wanted to see your ticket before you passed through the first (of three) x-rays. If you didn't have a ticket (had an e-ticket receipt only), you had to go to another line to get cleared to go back into the original line.

Then, slight complication because they took the nail scissors out of the luggage (even though they weren't in the carry-on) and returned them after second x-ray.

Two hours was barely enough, but that was a 5:40 pm flight.

Good luck!

Good luck!
