Jewish london information

WHere can I find out about "jewish" London? I want to visit places of significance, old synagogues, places to eat etc. There is an old book available on Jewish travel in Europe but I am afraid that because it's 10+ years old it may not be useful. I appreciate any suggestions!

I have visited the Bevis Marks synagogue, the oldest synagogue in England. (It's not that old actually, dates from 1701, because Jews had been expelled from England for several centuries. Benjamin Disraeli's family were members before they converted to Christianity. http://www.ottolenghi.org/bevis-marks.htm

I believe there's also a Jewish museum in Finchley ( a northern suburban section of London).

It's a small former synagogue, still in its 19th century condition, in an 18th century house in Spitalfields. It's only open on limited occasions while funds are being raised to open it full-time as a museum of immigration and refuge.

I believe the companies that organise guided walks do tours of the Jewish East End. Try a Google search for 'London walks' + Jewish.

London Walks - www.walks.com - has a walking tour of the Jewish East End a couple of times a week, including Sunday mornings - I went on their walk about 3 weeks ago. By far the highlight was the Bevis Marks synagogue. At the beginning of the walk, the guide noted that you have to use your imagination for much of the walk - she was not kidding. Much of the walk consisted of the "former site of....., or the "XYZ" building that used to be... Be aware of this if you go to the neighborhood. That's not to say its not interesting.

For current Jewish life, you could visit the Golders Green neighborhood (tube stop of same name) in north London. There is a variety of kosher restaurnats, stores selling Judaica, and a fairly high population of Jewish people.

HI! We were in London 2 summers ago. I was with my 3 kids so we did not tour Jewish sites but we did make quite a thourough tour of Jewish food establishments! Basically, the food in general does not have kosher certification like it does in the US. The people there know what is ok, what's not. So this makes walking into a snack stand in downtown London to buy a drink or ice cream difficult. There is a kosher section in Selfridge's (famous department store) but not extensive. There was a kosher restaurant near Madame Tussaud's, a deli meat place, which was pretty good, I think it was called Reuben's. The main place to eat, and we headed there every evening, is Golder's Green. YOu just take the tube there, walk a few blocks (when you exit the tube, you walk to the right on the main road) and you will start seeing lots of kosher markets, bakeries, and restaurants. Our favorite was a dairy one "Chalav U'Dvash", Milk and HOney. The food was really delicious and the waiters a lot of fun. The bakeries sell not only cookies and cakes and breads, but pizza! And at the markets (and at Selfridge's) you can buy packaged sandwiches. We stayed for a few days, including Shabbat, at a bed and breakfast in Hendon (which is right next to Golders Green), run by an elderly Jewish couple. It was a relief to have someone else supplying the food for a bit! A famous restaurant is Kaifeng (chinese food) in London, on Church Road. My daughter went there on a trip with her grandparents and loved it. ENjoy!!

Altho this thread is a few months old, I thought I'd share a website that I just bumped into ~ http://www.kosherdelight.com
It's got info on restaurants, hotels, etc. for Jewish communities around the world.
