Jewish Holidays in Florence

We will be in Florence Italy for Rosh Hashona and would like to attend services. Does anyone know if we need tickets or prior reservations to attend? Thanks

I certainly wouldn;t just turn up n a high holiday and assume there will be room. Definitely contact the synagogue inn advance for information.

jfreides:

Indeed, NYTravelers remarks should be heeded..soon.

The Central Sinagoga, alongside the Tiber (although not the only synagogue in Rome) would be your best possibility. Send email to:

or phone: 0668400451
fax: 0668400655

The handsome building is located in what was one of the city's ghettos.

Don't be put off by the armed guards around the building....a familiar sight at synagogues throughout the world.

If you wish to have a copy of my "Synagogues Visited Worldwide" (100+), just drop me an email.

Enjoy the holidays in Rome ..it will be a unique and pleasureable experience for you. I spent one Pesach in Kyoto about 62 years ago...most memorable...no, not in a shul, but in a battered former Japanese Army gymnasium. Recently visited Kyoto ('07) but found no trace of that building..not a matzoh crumb in sight!

An advanced wish for a happy, peaceful and meaningful New Year...chag simeach.

OP will be in Florence, not Rome, but I'm sure Stuart's database will be useful.

Alec...thanks for the heads up...my bad, very bad...dunno why I was thinking Rome...

jfreide: Sorry...

same goes for Florence...only major difference is that a police van is on duty in front of the beautiful domed sinagoga. It's a few blocks directly east of the Duomo, on
Via Farina..look at Florence map.

Hi
I've often attended Jewish services while traveling, and security is always very tight. Every time I've been advised or required to request admittance in advance. [email protected]

As of last month "the kitchen was closed." :-) I missed being able to see the ceramics collection.
