Does anyone have any experience with EnjoyRome's Jewish Ghetto tour? What is there to see and do and is it worht the $30?

Just got back from 3 days Florence and 4 days Venice ending May 21. We stayed at Hotel Principe on the GC and near the train station. This is the Cannaregio area where the Jewish Ghetto is located. We walked there within 10 minutes, looked around for 15, and then went on sightseeing. The Jewish Ghetto is an interesting place, and very rich in history. We were on our own, and certainly missed a lot by not having a tour guide. Its similar to a courtyard surrounded by cramped living quarters 4-5 stories high. I would think $30 per person could possibly be expensive, and could be better spent on other tours. But if you are Jewish (I'm Protestant), it could be a very moving experience and money well spent.

Four years ago in Venice we ventured into the ghetto area armed with a couple of guidebooks and some information we had printed off the internet. In a quiet little piazza (wish I remembered where, but it's kind of a maze back in those streets)we stumbled onto a small bookstore featuring books about the Jewish heritage of the area. We went inside and picked up some more materials, and the young man at the desk offered to give us a tour of the area. He locked the door of the bookstore and proceeded to take us around for about an hour, pointing out this and that and explaining the history of the area. It was a very memorable experience. I don't suppose it could be replicated, but do go to the area and do read up on it in advance, and if you see a small bookstore, go in...

Hi Chuck. I don't have experience with that organization but, as an option, you might consider trying to find a book (out of print, I believe) called "Romewalks" since it has five excellent and quite detailed self-guided walking tours, and one of them is of the Jewish Ghetto.

I do not know of Enjoy Rome's Jewish Ghetto tour but there is another company in Rome who give tours to the Jewish Ghetto and cover the history behind the arrival of the first Jews in Rome as traders in the 2nd century. Unfortunately, I do not have this information to hand at present, but if you e-mail me I will endeavour to find out the details.

Also, if you are travelling to Venice you can take a tour of the Jewish Ghetto and I have a document which I can send you with the details.
