jewelry indigenous to prague
 

hello-<BR>on another thread i read about a stone <BR>indigenous to the area around prague<BR>that the locals make into jewelry...the <BR>problem is no one mentioned the name <BR>of this stone....this sounds like a fun <BR>souvenir....does anyone know the name of<BR>this so i can ask for it by name<BR>thanks<BR>-otis

When you go to Prague, you will be amazed by the number of jewelry stores that sell both Amber and Garnets. One of these may be the 'stone' that you are thinking of. Some of it is high quality and some not. Just buy something you love and you can't go wrong. I AM sorry that I didn't pick up some amber...they had a very unique greenish gold color. Oh well...just another excuse for a trip back!<BR>Cheers,<BR>Jan

A little off-topic but maybe useful for amber shoppers: genuine amber floats in a supersaturated solution of salt water. Don't know how you'd test before you buy though without carrying around a jar of salt water.

Is amber less expensive than in the States?

Sorry I can't recall the name of the stone either, but there is a stone unique to the area around Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic about 100-150 miles from Prague. It was formed by a meteor crashing into the earth there. it's a kind of moss green color. They make earrings, necklaces, etc. out of it, usually with silver settings. Not terribly expensive. Makes very nice gifts. I believe there is an exhibit about it in the Prague airport departures area.

Just found the info. The stone I'm thinking of is called Moldavite, also Vltavin. It is available at the hotel shop in the courtyard of Hotel Ruze in Czesky Krumlov. The other stone that is famous in the area is Bohemian Garnet. If you can, try to find the Moldavite. It is more unique.
