Jewelry in Rome, good to buy? cheaper than US

Looking to buy 18K gold in Rome, would you advise, any idea if the prices are cheaper that US?

Some say yes. Certainly seems to be true in Florence in some places.

My general feeling about prices (or almost anything) in Rome, though, is that they run at the level you'd expect at equivalent shops in New York City, Los Angeles ... and think Fifth Avenue and Rodeo Drive, not Flatbush and Gardena.

After two Italian trips I can honestly say that I think jewelry prices are better at home. I did find great leather boots and wine, food and kitchen items to be a good deal. I love ceramics and jewelry but found that I could get better "made in Italy" items in Chicago than I could in Rome. Some places in Rome were very expensive. Of course, you must remember that over your limit you also have to pay duty. But if you love the styling of a piece and you will have it for a keepsake, why not.
