Wear you jeans while traveling, so you don't have to pack them.
Jeans are perfectly ok in all but the smartest restaurants, but as mentioned here, smart, well-fitting jeans, with a smart top. Not the baggy ones with sweatshirts.
Particularly in fashion at the moment is jeans with Chanel-type jacket, and high heels for evening. Look in a shop like Zara for great jackets at low prices. Another popular outfit is jeans with a see-through blouse (and a camisole underneath unless you're very confident)
And Mango has a great new line of fashionable jeans.
Skirt is absolutely not necessary, unless you like wearing one.
For fashion ideas, have a look at www.net-a-porter.com and see how they present the jeans there.
Have fun! I travel with my mum too (and she wears jeans in Italy).

While jeans are comfortable and certainly can be worn in Italy, the FACT is that jeans are bulky to pack, and dry very slowly. In my view, it is much better to pack less bulky and faster drying clothing when on a trip.

You're on holiday for under a month, why worry about "faster drying" clothes. Pack enough for a change a couple of times each day, and if you are a light packer (how I despair) then have the hotel launder your clothes for you.

By all means bring a pair of comfortable, but not junky looking, jeans. I'm a frequent off-season traveler and believe me, lots of people wear jeans. When I travel in winter, I'd rather wear dark-blue or black jeans with a good sweater and jacket. And jeans decrease the need for long underwear (I hate wearing it).
I still bring some nice dress pants/trousers if going to upscale restaurants or evening events.
November in Rome and Florence should not be very cold. But it COULD get way...weather fluctuates wildly that month, just as it does in March.

If you love wearing jeans, then by all means bring a pair. There's no shortage of Italians wearing jeans. I saw a fit couple (who looked to be in their 60s) on a recent flight to Austin, and they both looked great in jeans.

Money talks
But it don't sing and dance
And it don't walk
As long as I can have your here with me
I'd much rather be
Forever in blue jeans, babe
(This song will now be echoing through my head as I meander around the Foro Romano- thanks a lot Neil)

Faster drying because it RAINS! While jeans are perfectly okay to bring and wear, I still think less bulky and faster drying clothing (for when it RAINS) is much better to bring on a trip when luggage space is limited.
