We don't wear shorts but most women wear Jeans. I am late 30's wear low rise boot cut or flared jeans. I wear them dressed up with boots and a ncie top and pashmina or dressed down for food shhopping. People dress more alike in the world than you realise.

Just another example of American Cultural Imperialism.

I have never seen fashion police in any European country so go with whatever you feel good in. My dw is 60+ and occasionally wears jeans and looks good. If other travellers and locals spend time assessing your dress code, they have more to be concerned about than you do!!

My sister went to Europe (Italy) last May and brought a lot of khakis/pants and when she wore them, she felt overdressed compared to everyone else around her. She said that everyone in Italy dressed very casually in jeans. Also, when her friend went to Ireland...she said it was very casual everywhere. Jeans are fine. Hope this helps!

Lol...all the Canadian comments reminded me of the time we stopped to help the stranded motorists. (I guess I should mention - we live in Germany). The entire family was wearing shirts proclaiming their pride in being Canadian...but they were all Americans from Texas. They told us that they didn't want to be branded as 'Ugly Americans'...HA! As soon as they opened their mouths, it was obvious they were NOT canadian...Wear the jeans!

The answer to all clothes questions whatever you wear.

Groomed and slim - fit right in.
Scruffy and stout - stick right out

Yikes, over 40 is considered "older women?" Some 40 year olds still have it going on and would put any 20 year old to shame. haha Granted there are some "old" 40 year olds, but some are smokin'. hehe But, of course, I know what the original poster really was saying. Just when I opened the post and saw 40, I thought "that's not older." But, I know what you mean, in certain countries women "over 40" don't tend to dress as young as women "over 40" in the states. I don't mean this in a mean way at all, but I never understand why people don't want to be recognized as an American when traveling. I've had European friends tell me that American's stand out because they're usually more "made up" when out touring....bigger hair, more lipstick, etc.... so if that's true...to blend in....don't fix your hair as much, don't wear make-up...lol

I think you have something there missmissy - American women can tend to look very groomed and less natural than their European counterparts. Also, I think the cut of the jeans is distinctly different. So, if you want to blend in, as well as less makeup and hairspray, buy your jeans in Europe!

At the risk of being decapitated, a skirt can better hide the ravages of age. I know my wife looks better in a skirt than jeans.

This is just my personal feeling but I think the clothes for women are more "conservative " in the U.S. and european women wear styles that some of the younger women wear as well. I find when I go back to the U.S. my other half finds lots of good mens clothes but I really don't find much that I would find trendy like in Europe. Maybe we are all mutton dressed all Lambs but I prefer the styles here

There are young and older people who wear jeans in the U.S and Europe.
There are people who wear what looks inappropriate and distasteful in New York and Florence .
There are women in their 20 who should never wear low rise tight jeans and women in their 50s who still look fine in them.
Perhaps a good look in the mirror ( especially at one's behind) should be the deciding factor.
