The report in the telegrapg says a lone violin busker was nearby in Trafalgar Square but he didn't know the marseillaise tune. Bystanders brought it up on their phones and the violinist serenaded the silent crowd . . . That would have shattered me if I was there.

Je suis Charlie aussi, and I agree with sandralist and others who have said we must stand together, now more than ever.
I was very disappointed to read so many Fodorites, and so many Americans in general, express the opinion that Seth Rogen should not have made a film that so angered Kim Jong Un as to provoke threats of violence, and Sony should not have released it. (I'm referring, of course, to The Interview, that sophomoric comedy that issues a scathing indictment of the North Korean regime before blowing the kid dictator's head clean off.)
I wonder how many Frenchmen think Charlie Hebdo went too far? I hope we can all realize that the line moves closer every time you take a step back.

Lest what I wrote seem like a non sequitur, I heard a Lebanese satirist say on NPR today that the problem is not Muslim extremism, it's a growing world-wide intolerance to offense, a growing belief that one is entitle to not be offended. I thought he made an excellent point that neatly short-circuits this clash of civilizations crap: it's a clash of sensibilities, with some people feeling that they have to right to silence those who offend them. I know I see this in American politics and society, and it's not so different from the way radical Islamists feel, except that world events have conspired to arm them and give them ample reason to resort to violence, or no reason not to.

You can see the same censorship happening every day on forums like TA, where people seem to be easily offended, outraged or just don't think anyone has the right to disagree with them.
Every time someone reports a post on a public forum as inappropriate, he is guilty of killing Charlie Hebdo.

good point, Manouche - on another thread I used the word "heroin" and the post was removed, goodness knows why. Perhaps I offended someone else's delicate sensibilities.
I think that there is a place for the yellow triangle though - where there are gratuitous insults, as occurred on a recent thread, but it should be rare, I agree.

A great deal is still unknown about the motives of the attackers, so jumping to conclusions doesn't seem warranted even while expressing solidarity with those determined to preserve free speech.
Several reports of the shooting have included the information that the attackers identified themselves as Al Qaida from Yemen -- accurately or not, no one seems to know yet -- and several analysts have pointed out the rivalry for media attention between various groups of violent groups. It also appears to be the case that the 2 brothers had a long history of seeking to join up with militants, and one of them said that he had been motivated to do by what happened at Abu Ghraib -- another inexcusable enactment of violence.
I think likening the assassinations in Paris to having one's posts banned by overzealous or even just-doing-their-jobs travel board forum editors is airhead to an extreme. Actually, one is entitled not to be abused in many circumstances, including social media. Speaking as someone whose forum posts and accounts have been deleted and banished on many occasions, I see absolutely no relationship to what happened in Paris yesterday and what has occasionally happened to me or anybody else on TA or Fodor's or any privately run message forum is having posts taken off the site. That is nonsense.
