Driving toward Bellagio, Italy, on the narrow road and seeing the .......Italian drivers. That will really drop your jaw!

Having our flight from Honolulu to New Zealand need to make an unscheduled (not scary) landing in Samoa in a storm in the middle of the night: after hours and hours over empty ocean, a full moon intermittently lighting the towering thunderheads all around us and the tiny speck of land that appeared below, with blowing palm trees and whitecaps along the shore, just visible through rain-streaked windows. It was partly the unexpectedness of the situation, but it truly evoked a jaw-dropping response to the proverbial mystery and romance of the "South Seas". <BR> <BR>

Jaw dropping - <BR>anywhere in Venice (especially the bridge of sighs) <BR>surprisingly, Tiananmen Square (thought it would be the Great Wall, but the history in Tiananmen Square is overpowering) <BR>Pikes Place Market in Seattle <BR>Looking out my hotel window across the Bay of Naples to Mt. Vesuvious <BR>Everytime I get on a plane and know I'm going somewhere new and will always be awed.

Seeing El Greco's painting "El Enterramiento del Conde de Orgaz" in person in Toledo, Spain, after all those years of seeing black and white pictures of it in textbooks literally took my breath away.

My jaw literally dropped the first time I saw an Italian woman. Of course, then my wife nearly broke my jaw. Now that's amore!
maitaitom, you sound like my husband! We were in Munich a few years ago when we happened upon at least a dozen beautiful, statuesque, scantily-clad women. Turns out they were doing some sort of photo shoot, and they were models. I don't know about jaw-dropping, but I think my husband would call it an eye-popping sight.

"maitaitom, you sound like my husband!"<BR><BR>If that is true, then my utmost condolences to you. As you can see by my above post (the " and nothing else) once you mention "scantily-clad women" I lose it completely. If you are like my wife, you must have a good sense of humor and know that we're only looking at those eye-popping models, but thinking of you. OK, my wife doesn't buy that one either. Take care.

1) Wieskirche, Germany. As I got out of the car I wondered why the hell I had driven 1 hour out of my way to visit this small country church. When I stepped inside - my heart stopped - I had never, or have never seen anything so incredibly beautiful.
"Wieskirche, Germany. When I stepped inside - my heart stopped - I had never, or have never seen anything so incredibly beautiful."<BR><BR>My sentiments exactly. A service was going on when we visited and it truly was an amazing sight.
It was the first timwe I saw maitaitom. It was in cassis and he was wearing one of those tiny bathing suits the European guys wear. I couldn't stop staring. My husband wouldn't talk to me for the rest of the day.

"It was the first time I saw maitaitom. It was in cassis and he was wearing one of those tiny bathing suits the European guys wear. I couldn't stop staring."<BR><BR>Or laughing, I bet.

Hahaha Cigalenta!!!I could not have said it better!!!:):)<BR>

Although I have never worn a speedo, when Lufthansa lost our luggage, we had to buy some clothes for our stay in the Cinque Terre. It was very hot, so, like an idiot, I bought a tank top. When I stepped out of the shop, our friends who accompanied us on the trip yelled, "Look, it's one of the Village People." Needless to say, tank tops and speedos are verbotten in my wardrobe.

How time flies! I clicked on the Fodors Europe board and saw a tile thatlooked familiar. Sure enough, it was a post I started almost two years. I've been lucky enough to have gone on a few trips since then (Iceland, Norway, Denmark; Ecuador; transatlantic cruise St. Thomas to Lisbon;) but no more jaw dropping sites...but a loit of GOOD ones.

Flying into Hong Kong's old airport, Kai Tak. Landing on that runway between the skyscrapers is incredibly jaw dropping.
My Howard, you do get around. And were you wearing your itsy bitsy bikini?<BR> ......................Mrs. Slocum
Leaving for the airport in Athens early in the morning, it was still dark. They said there was a great view of the Acropolis from the roof of our hotel. So, I took the elevator to the top and walked around to the back for the view. There was the Acropolis lit up with a full moon hanging over it. Breathtaking!
To M. Slocum....sorry, the only bathing suits I own are the "boxer" kind.
I'd like to go to Prague one day. Someone said it was more beautiful than Paris. Is this true? and even if not so what's jaw dropping there?<BR>
Standing on the Great Wall of China and watching it "snake" over countless mountains.
It's interesting that you mentioned Prague above. I was reading the whole thing getting ready to post: the most jaw-dropping experience for me was leaving an evening concert in the Rudolfinum in Prague and turning around to see the castle lit up against the night sky. Fantastic!
Howard, I was browsing the board for info on Verdun when I happened upon this thread and thought you posted a great conversation-starting question. <BR><BR>After some thought, another jaw-dropping sight from my travels would be from Hitler's Kehlsteinhaus (aka "Eagle's Nest"), near Berchtesgaden. It was a lovely, sunny day, and from near the top of the mountain we could see for miles - mountains, valleys, farmland, towns - just incredibly lovely.<BR><BR>I never saw maitaitom in a Speedo, but did see a guy in a very skimpy swimsuit on the beach at Torremolinos, and that pretty much scarred me for life.
"I never saw maitaitom in a Speedo"<BR><BR>And no one ever shall. However, my wife does like me in a pair of walking shorts.
Jaw dropping site: Sunset on an island in the Okavango Delta in Botswana Africa: A very proud and confident lioness saunters up to our (open sided) range rover, yawns lazily then lays down within touching distance of us. Thoughtiwasgunnadie - literally. Unbelievable photos - once my heart started again (and our guide said it was okay to take pics as long as we didn't stand up or move at all. Flash didn't even faze her)

Approaching Santorini by ferry at dusk.<BR><BR>
I gotta agree with Grandmere - approaching Santorini by ferry. You see it in the haze for about 2 hours before you arrive and nothing prepares you it when you approach. Silence all round (except for the sound of cameras clicking!!)
