January sales in Florence

Can someone, perhaps someone who lives there or spends lots of time there, tell me the exact date that the January sales (in retail fashion shops) begin in Florence and in Bologna, specifically for 2006? Would it be the first weekend after New Year's Day? As I recall, the January sales begin on different dates in different cities in Italy. Thanks very much!

Since no one is helping you with your query, I will give you some information. I have been in Florence in January, and the sales (saldis) are going on around the middle of the month. I can't give you a specific starting time, however. From the amount of sales merchandise I have seen in the shops during that time frame, the sales can't start too far ahead.

Thanks. I recall that they begin on the weekend; I was hoping to nail down the exact week in order to plan my trip; would hate to be there the week before they begin. I have been able to buy some wonderful things at great prices in the past in the big cities but, as I wrote, I think that each city begins its sale on a different week in January. By the way, I think January is a wonderful month for travel in Italy! Few tourists, great sales!

I think (and that is truly a qualified "think" as I am not an expert shopper) that the exact date of the beginning of the Florence sales varies from year to year.

You may want to contact the tourist board, or even one of the major stores, who could tell you more. If there is such a thing similar to a Chamber of Commerce (there is, again, I think, but can't recall the name right now) they might also be of help.

Are you staying at a hotel or apartment? They could also be of help.

I can tell you that I suspect the sales were off to a rather late start this past January, because they lingered into the first 7 or 8 days of February. That's first hand experience.
