I think the important thing is to get a coat which breaks the wind, is waterproof, and which at least covers your behind. Don't buy a special coat unless you don't have one which meets the above.
I have an Eddie Bauer GoreTex Parka and also a 3/4 length London Fog Microfibre coat. Either one works great with Sweaters or a light weight fleece sweater/jacket underneath. If it's really cold, I like to have a pair of Cuddle Dud thermals or a pair of tights under my slacks for warmth. I may also add the thermals on top if I really think it's cold. A warm scarf is a must -- that will make a world of difference.
By the way, I pretty much dressed as described above during the winter when I lived in Germany for three years. Including a lot of time spent on Volksmarches (basically, 10-20 KM walks through woods, fields, villages) and I was fine. I never bought a heavy coat and never really needed it.
(And I'm also a warm weather person who normally lives in Texas. The only time I've bought a warm coat in the last 25 years was when I had to travel to Alaska in the winter -- then I bought a down coat. But I'd never consider using one in London.)

London is damp and that dampness can chill you to the bone! You should be able to do the trip with just carry-on. I'm going for 7 days in January and will take one pair of great jeans, one pair of black dress pants, a pair of tights to wear with the dress and a pair of leggings. I will take one black jersey dress, two thin cashmere sweaters and three fitted t-shirts. Shoes will be a pair of flats and a pair of ankle boots. Three undies (which I wash out in the shower) and four pair of socks. On the plane I will wear my three-quarter length coat, the jeans and boots, a t-shirt topped with a chunky sweater, a big cashmere scarf and my gloves. There is still room to bring home stuff. Buy the umbrella there and leave it there! There is no way you need to take 55lbs of luggage - you can get anything you need there. With all due respect, 55lbs of luggage is only for ski trips or lugging sports equipment.
