Hi all! I found an amazing flight deal to Copenhagen for January to February and am trying to plan a 3-5 week itinerary between job contracts.

I was thinking it might be too cold to enjoy Sweden and other northern countries, so after Denmark I was thinking of making my way to Italy where it will be a little warmer, and seeing Carnivale in Venice. However I am not at all set on Italy and curious where you all would recommend! I will probably be travelling alone and am interested in art and design.

Where would you go in Europe in January/February?

It will be cold everywhere in Europe. In order to get milder climate you must go south as far as Andalucia or the Baleares.

If you are interested in art and design you will find a lot of sites in Germany, including the Bauhaus in Dessau, the design museum and art museum in Essen and many first-rank art museums in Düsseldorf, Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart and other places.

Basel is another destination with several outstanding art museums in turn, in the suburbs (Schaulager) and also, on the German side in Weil am Rhein, the Vitra Design Museum.

Instead of spending too much time in Italy where it is cold and raining enjoy the snow in the Black Forest and in the Alps.

Well Italy in Rome and south will very probably be warmer than Scandinavia - but there is still the possibility of cold weather and even snow. In Venice you can get a lot of chilly rain (a friend was there one Christmas and got 5 days of rain and one of light snow) or you may get cool and sunny.

For a better chance of moderate temps - 50s or even low 60s - you will need to head to southern Spain or Sicily of Malta.

It really depends on exactly what you are looking for.

It is not "cold and raining" in Italy during your travel days except for occasional storms, and most of Italy enjoys mild daytime weather during that time frame except in Alpine locations.

Other destinations with milder weather and interesting art and design are southern Spain and Lisbon/Porto (although Porto does get frequent rainy winter weather).

Although it is not sunny or dry in winter, Antwerp is an excellent destination for those interested in art and design.

Barcelona if you have an interest in Gaudi's work. It is a much wider range of design than we often see, plus there are other wonderful buildings there. You could also do some day trips to interesting places.
