We purchased a carnet on the Eurostar, went outside of Gare Du Nord and waited for our bus, watched closely how the carnet was used then jumped aboard. Easy! We didn't use the metro at all, just loved riding the buses. We felt like locals, chatting to people at the bus stop and on the buses.

We love the bus and use a combination of bus and Metro depending on the situation. A couple of points:

(a) It is true that sometimes certain bus line can suffer delays. Generally, if one doesn't come within double the posted time interval, I give up and hit the Metro.

(b) You have to be careful -- even though a stop may show several lines, it is possible that one or more may only run weekdays or restricted hours. Read the posted schedule carefully.

(c) Some buses have GPS screens in them, so you always know where you are - - - cooooool!

(d) If I am pretty far from my destination and/or not sure of where I am, I don't pay any attention at all as to which bus I board. Just get on the first one that comes - - within a stop or two, I am sure to see a Metro sign where I can get off and find my way to where I want to go.

So glad to see this thread revived...especially since we head back to Paris next month. I needed the reminder of how much I enjoyed my one day on the buses last year !
It's great to see even more helpful and encouraging posts, some with excellent tips and details. Thanks to all who are shepherding us former busophobes into the light.
