Unless it starts up again.

Small chance, Americans have recently stopped funding terrorists.

nanabee Jul 31st, 2007 08:43 AM

"small chance, Americans have recently stopped funding terrorists"

OUCH!!

Poohgirl Jul 31st, 2007 08:47 AM

Funny, *I* don't remember funding any terrorists.

hetismij Jul 31st, 2007 08:51 AM

One man's terrorist is anothers freedom fighter......

ira Jul 31st, 2007 08:54 AM

Ah, the wisdom of Ronald Reagan.

cigalechanta Jul 31st, 2007 08:57 AM

I wish the president would stop saying fighting the WAR on terrorism. That makes terrorists soldiers. They are criminals.

EnglishOne Jul 31st, 2007 09:06 AM

As the IRA targetted innocent men, WOMEN AND CHILDREN, I think we can safely determine whether they were *freedom fighters* or *terrorists* SURELY TO GOD?!

janisj Jul 31st, 2007 09:18 AM

"Funny, *I* don't remember funding any terrorists. "

Probably true - however nearly 90% of the funding for the NI factions did come from the US NE corridor.

xyz123 Jul 31st, 2007 09:20 AM

Yes boys and girls...this remains a very sorry example of American hypocracy...we expect assistance in the war on terror yet in the 1980's, often times these IRA terrorists took refuge in the USA and the USA government refused British requests to extradite them back to Britain. So very sad.

willit Jul 31st, 2007 09:52 AM

Without seeming to want to get into American bashing, this has gone on until recently. An Irish expat supporter of one of the breakaway nationalist factions was sending handguns through the post to NI, and the local courts refused the application for extradition. I would have o look up exact references, but it has certainly been since 2001.

Poohgirl - I understand your frustration about not being responsible for funding terrorism. I suppose that 99% of Iraquis, Iranians, Afghanis or Saudis don't either, but when it comes to generalisations it seems that aby support = total support.

PalenQ Jul 31st, 2007 09:58 AM

wow i would have thunk that more than a pittance came from Eire - guess zero did it seems.

PalenQ Jul 31st, 2007 09:58 AM

Janisj - BTW doesn't this belong in the Lounge?

hetismij Jul 31st, 2007 10:51 AM

I agree the IRA were (are?)terrorists, but a huge chunk of the population of the US thought, and still think, otherwise...
But I'm glad it's over. Let's hope it stays that way. There are enough other tragedies being played out around the world without that one starting all over.

PalenQ Jul 31st, 2007 10:54 AM

Without terrorism perhaps the US would still be part of a United Kingdom and Eire may well still be a vassel of England - much like the Irish in Northern Ireland still are.
