It's all planned - any comments???
Hi all,

This is my first post to this forum, however I have been checking and searching my choices here and much appreciate all of the valuable information.

Now that I am pretty much done, I would appreciate any input on the itinerary.

Here it goes.

Arrive Rome 7am 23rd of June
Hotel Mozart (pre-booked from 22nd) to 28th
Train to Sorrento Via Naples
Hotel Minerva 3 nights to 1 July
Train to Florence
Hotel Balestri 3 nights to 4 July
Train to Venice
Hotel Scandanavia 2 nights to 6 July
Train to Milan
Hotel Una Cusani 2 nights to 8 July
Train to Varenna (Lake Como)
Hotel Albergo Du Lac 2 nights to 10 July
Train to Santa Margharita Ligure
Hotel Continental 4 nights to 14 July
Train to Rome
Depart Rome 11:55pm - back to OZ

I would love to hear anyone's opinion on this itinerary and selected hotels. I was aiming for an average of under Euro 200 per night and have come in at around 181 so could upgrade in one or two places if there is anything available which would be much nicer for not too much more money.

Many Thanks in advance.

Hez

Sounds like a wonderful trip -- lots to see and do, and really not too rushed. Can't comment on any of the hotels. You will have a wonderful time!
Overall sounds terrific except I would add a night a two to Rome, Florence or Venice and skip Milan. So much to do in all of those great cities as opposed to Milan. Have fun!
|
Since it's all planned, I think it's going to be great. If it were not too late to make one change, I'd add a night in Venice and take it away from Rome. To me, it would make the whole trip perfect; but it's good as it is anyway.

Very nice trip--you have done your homework. I do not know the hotels in Venice or Milan, but the rest look good.
|
Have a wonderful time!
Remember to post a report when you get home:)

Thanks!!!!

I don't want to change around too much but based on suggestions I think we will take the 6pm train from Venice which will give us pretty much a whole extra day there, and then the 10:10am to Varenna giving us more time there. This limits Milan down to a day, enough to satisfy my curriosity while still heeding the advice of more experienced Italy travellers. Thanks for the help!

Heather,

Sounds like a lovely trip..you have certainly done your homework... I wouldn't change a thing! Have the most wonderful time..and remember the places you want to come back to!! You will want to come back and spend more time...
Spent 3 weeks in Rome and I never had enough time...you get into the pace of a city and then you are hooked!!

Did you book trains in advance or how does that work the best for your trip? We're planning to travel by train from Garmisch, Germany to Rome, then to Venice and back to Garmisch in September. Some in this forum suggest getting tickets while in the States before leaving, and others say wait and get them in Europe as they are more costly through raileurope.com. Can anyone clear this up some for us?
|
Sounds like as nice trip. Now when are you showering, napping, eating, and using the toilet? Make sure you keep us up to date!! :))

Bettiann.

I'll be buying 8 day Italian rail passes through http://www.railsaver.com Believe it or not it's cheaper to do this than to book the same thing here in Australia, even with the $38US postage. Apparantly reservations cannot be made until 2 months before travel. I believe this can be done through trenitalia.it, although their site seems to be partially down at the moment. Anyone know about this?
|
Janice,

I think if I nap while I'm showering, and eat while I'm using the toilet (not very sanitary I know but I wouldn't want my pasta to go soggy) I should be able to cope. Or, I could get one drip going in and another going out - that'd cut those nasty neccesities right in half (might cut down on any potential romance though) ;)

H

Great response--you are pretty cool after all. And here I thought you were too anal .. Well anyway, you know those Italian guys are pretty open-minded. So you might try that schedule you suggested. You are bound to be on the streets and meet more of those gorgeous men if you do!
