Itinerary Suggestions- 8 days in Austria( July 2011)

Dear Fodor members,
We are planning a family trip to Austria in July . I have been able to prepare a tentative itinerary, however there are still many doubts for which I need your guidance.

Firstly, we are travelling as a family of 7 Adults. Trip details are :

Arrive on 22 July in Vienna - transfer to Salzburg via train.
22 Jul -27 Jul: Salzburg Region
28-29 Jul : Vienna
30 Jul - depart

While in Salzburg, i have tentatively kept aside 2 days to explore Salzburg City. Besides this i was planning 3 days trips. I have been able to come up with 5 options and need your suggestions as to which three to select (open to other alternatives as well)
1. Lake Königsee and Berchtesgaden historic town and Eagles nest
2. Salzkammergut region (Is it better taking the Schafbergbahn)
3. Bavarian Alps
4. Zell Am See
5. Hallstatt

Hi B,

Looks nice.

The Salzburg card is worth the money.

You might find my trip report helpful:

We decided to rent a car for our 8 day trip given that we area group of 7. We will be basing ourselves in the town of Faistenau for 6 days and intend to take day trips to cover St Gilgen, St Wolfgang, Innsbruck, Zell Am see, Hallstat and Konnigsee. Can anyone advise if going to Bavarian Alps on t rented vehicle is safe?

What size car did you rent that will hold 7 adults and all of the luggage?

I would skip Innsbruck--too far.
The Bavarian castles are also a long way---you have tons to see in the Salzkammergut---but, I would have 2 vehicles.

Hi,

I'd also suggest skipping Innsbruck and Neuschwanstein. "Mad" King Ludwig's Herrenchiemsee is a little more than an hour drive.

I don't really understand the question "Can anyone advise if going to Bavarian Alps on t rented vehicle is safe?" If you plan on driving it in Austria, I see no difference driving it in Bavaria. I'd also be interested in knowing which vehicle holds 7 people and their luggage.

Thank you for the replies. We have rented a 9 seater vehicle( Ford Transit, Renault Espace(or similar).

I've skipped Innsbruck, however we will take a day trip to Zell Am See. I have also skipped Bavarian Alps since it is a 4 hr drive from Salzburg.Reason I asked whether it was safe was the itineraries of tour operators mention transfer to a mountain vehicle.

Hi,

Just to clarify, "Bavarian Alps" are right next door to Salzburg... entire Berchtsgaden area.
