Cell phone from USA usage in Italy?

What do I need to do to be able to use my Verizon cellphone while on vacation in Italy?

I answered your query in the other thread. You need an International roaming package from Verizon, unless your phone is unlocked in which case you can buy a SIM in Italy, but then you get a different number you will need to tell people at home. They will then be making an expensive international call if they need to contact you.

It also depends on what kind of cellphone you have - not all of them work in Europe.

I have an IPhone 5. I don't want to get a new phone/number in Italy, as that's not convenient for us and we do not want to notify the people who may need to reach us.

I can get the international roaming from Verizon, but I've read conflicting information. Do I need some sort of international HARDWARE or ATTACHMENT or something?

I'm a confused Luddite.

No, you do not need any hardware or attachment. Just call Verizon (or go to the Verizon store) and sign up for the international package.

Turn off data roaming and neither receive nor send text messages, tweets, etc. it can be astonishingly expensive. Use wifi when you have it to message friends and do searches.

Make sure you understand the costs involved in making calls, sending texts or emails.
