Itinerary planned! Rome-Florence-Positano. Hotel suggestions for Florence?
 

Thank you to all the fodorites for their opinions. We decided to spread out the trip and see more areas. We will spend 4 nights in Rome at the Albergo Del Senato, 3 nights in Florence with day trips to San Gimignano and Siena. Need Hotel suggestions and then to Positano for four nights staying at the Buca di Bacco! I can't wait!

We would like a modern hotel, but don't want to spend a lot since we won't spend much time at the hotel.

I was just wondering if you went on your trip yet? I am trying to plan basically the exact same honemoon as your trip and wanted to see how it went! We are thinking of flying into Rome, staying for 2 nights, then train to Florence and stay for three nights, then renting a car and driving down to the amalfi coast to then stay in positano for the remaining 5 nights. Then we wuold probably fly out of Naples. Wanted to see what you though of that and if you would have done any of your trip differently. We do NOT want to be exhausted from travelling around so much, so trying to keep it to 3 places.

Your plan seems doable, but you will only have probably 1.5 days in Rome and you'll be jet lagged. Not the best circumstances for Rome which has enough sights to occupy a month!, and which can be an exhausting city if you try to cram in a lot into a short period of time. Also, driving the Amalfi Coast in high season is widely considered to be sheer madness :-). We did it in November and I still wouldn't do it again! Just so you're warned. You could easily train to Naples and then hire a driver to take you to Positano. Personally, I think 5 days is a long time for just Positano but you could always day trip to Capri. If you want to see Pompei and Herculaneum, Sorrento makes a more convenient base.

Hilton Garden hotel in Florence..outside of city, has frequent shuttle to center, has parking, and feeds you breakfast. We were happy there as the parking and driving in city is brutal.

For a central, clean, reasonably priced hotel in Florence, you can't go wrong with Hotel Europa or Hotel Casci. Personally, I prefer Europa (the nicer class of room), for Miriam's incredible hospitality. She actually bought an Italian Disney coloring book and toys as a gift for our one year old son when we stayed there last year. The rooms are large for city standards and again, the level of service is astounding for such a reasonably priced hotel (and it has been at every stay).

Congrats! My wife and I took our honeymoon to Italy in 2009. We did Venice, Florence then Rome in that order. This was my first time to Italy and it was amazing, rich with history, and just beautiful. While in Florence we did a cooking course at inTavola just across the Santa Trinita.

It was a great night. We even met another couple from Delaware while we were there. Who would have through two couples from Delaware running into each other in Florence.

The view from the top of the Duomo is a must, but be ready for the stairs!

We enjoyed the Plaza Lucchesi in Florence. We had a wonderful view over the Arno, and found the location very convenient
