Itinerary help/Rome
 

Our family will be in Rome the first week of June. I am trying to plan to make the best use of our time. We are 2 adults and 3 children (ages 11-18). We will be staying in an apartment around Campo de Fiore. We arrive early from the US on Tuesday morning and just plan to walk the area around our apartment (and maybe Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps).
Wednesday morning we would like to attend the papal audience. Our afternoon will be free for touring. Should we stay to see the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica on this day?
Thursday - we are planning a day trip
Friday - open for touring Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill
Saturday - open
Other interests: Capitoline Museums, Pantheon, Catacombs
I would appreciate any advice regarding our schedule. We will leave on Sunday, taking the train to Cinque Terre and then Florence and Venice. Thank you!

I only had 4 days in Rome and one was devoted to a cooking class. We met at the market in Campo de Fiori. I enjoyed the market and went back later to buy things. I accidentally happened on the Trevi Fountain because I went to a shop that featured Murano glass and continued to walk down the narrow street to have lunch. After lunch continued and discovered a huge mass of people at the fountain. I was able to move closer to get something of a photo but mostly the first photo I took as a joke is what I remember "I must be someplace famous". Although there were quite a few people at the Piazza Navona it wasn't any where near as crowded. It is within walking distance of the market. Friends had recommended visiting there and later I've read there are some good places to eat.

I do not recommend taking a double decker bus ride. I thought it would be good for getting an overview of the area but it was always crowded and unless you were on top, the view might be something you couldn't see if you weren't on the right side of the bus. Recorded narration was very brief and between "famous places" there was terrible music.

All depends on your interests. You can easily stay more than a week in Rome without having seen all highlights.
