itinerary help for St Malo, Mont St Michel and Dinan

I arrive in CDG at 9:15 am on June 27. Have 4 days/3 nights until I need to attend a meeting, and hope to visit St. Malo and Mont St Michel (and possibly Dinan).

I know I can take the TGV from the airport around 1:15pm on June 27 which will get me to Rennes around 3 PM.

So my question is.. is it better to just take the bus to Mont St Michel that same afternoon (will get me there around 7 pm)? or is it better to do overnight in Rennes and get to Mont St. Michel the next morning?

So my choice is (1) to spend the first night in Mont St Michel then next two nights in St Malo, or (2) first night in Rennes, second in Mont St Michel and the third in St Malo.

Any help to make this decision is very much appreciated. Also, if you have suggestion on how I might change the itinerary, I'd like to hear it.

I'm assuming I can return to Paris from St Malo by train. Is this correct?

Thank you.

As one who hates one night stands, I have a third alternative. Stay all three nights in St. Malo. (We liked the Hotel Alexandria with a wonderful balcony overlooking the beach - so relaxing after touring all day. This was a few years ago.) Then take day trips to Dinan and Mont St. Michel. We were driving, but I'm sure you can get public transportation. The drive from Dinan to St. Malo is only thirty mintes. I can't remember for sure how long it is to Mont St. Michel. I would guess about an hour and a half.

From Paris to St-Malo is about three hours by train. Some are direct TGVs, otherwise it's a TGV from Paris to Rennes, then a local train to St-Malo. There are buses from St-Malo to both Mont-St-Michel and Dinan; they may only run twice a day, but it's quite easy to do a day trip from St-Malo.

Thanks for feedback so far.

Is there any merit to getting to Mont St Michel at 7 pm? Is it difficult to locate lodging or restaurant this late in the evening?

If I were to stay in St Malo for the entire duration, would I stay be able to see Mont St Michel illuminated in the evening?

Well, I sure wouldn't show up on le Mont St-Michel at 7 pm the last week in June expecting to find lodging for the night, if that's what you're asking. No way.

Of course you'd find restaurants open - they would all have just begun service. They'd probably be crowded, but you'd get a meal.

Oh no... I would have made a hotel reservation before I get there. That is the reason why I am asking now. so I can have all hotel reservations made.

It has more to do with... am I wasting my time by rushing to get to Mont St Michel so late at night. I wondered if it would be better if I waited until morning.
