ITINERARY HELP FOR MUNICH IN JUNE/JULY
 

Help!
We are staying in Munich for 7 nights the last week in June/1st week in July. Any suggestions on what to do /where to go /what to see /where to eat etc...? How about weather and packing suggestions? Any and all help is most appreciated.

We were in the Munich area the end of June, 2 years ago. It was hot, hot, hot.

I would check weather.com right before you leave to check out the weather patterns.

Just a couple of places to eat/drink:

Spatenhaus -- great for dinner - authentic German food. Good deal.

Augustiner Keller beergarten near the main train station. I consider it the best beer in Munich. You could get a nice lunch/dinner there also.

On a nice day, the English Gardens -- Place called SeeHaus. Lunch, beer/pretzel, sit out and people watch in a nice outdoor atmosphere on the lake.

Hofbrauhaus -- Go in, look around and then leave and go across the street or to the end of the courtyard and have something to eat.

Type Munich into the search engine and you will get a lot of posts for day trips and other interesting things to do/see in the city. ((b))

From reading you post, I am wondering why you are going to Munich. You seem to have no inkling of anything to do or see.

Have you done any research? What do you like to do? Who all is going, etc., etc.?

Do some research and then come back with more specific questions.

We spent a week in Munich last August. Stayed our in bogenhausen which was convenient to the UBahn/SBahn station and had a little shopping area adjacent to the hotel with several restaurants, a grocery store, drug store,etc. As for things to do. We saw: (with two teenagers in tow) Dachau (excellent), Nymphenburg Palace as part of a half day city tour, Berteschgarden on a full day tour, Olympic Park (swam in the pool, walked the grounds, listed to music, etc., went to the BMW museum(not a big deal), toured the marianplatz with churches, stores, etc. Saw the glockenspiel, residenz, etc. The public transporation is a good value, on time and safe. We also shopped at the outdoor market and happened on a 'garten gruppe' parade - gardenclubs with beautiful floats, handing out bunches of flowers, etc. It was great. For places to eat: do see the hofbrau haus, ratskeller, movenpick was good for our kids and had desserts to die for...you'll be there around asparagus season (near the end) and mushroom season (near the beginning) so the food will highlight these. We did not see Neushwanstein but will on a future trip. We didn't get too hung up on specific restaurants - mostly looked at the posted menu and went in. Outdoor seating is great; people watching is a huge past time and its easy to grab a wurst, some potatoes, a stein of beer, apfelstrudel and let the world parade past. We loved the city!

From a previous posting about our time in Munich in June 2002:

One evening we dined at the Liebighof im Lehel on Liebighofstr. not far from the Schack-Galerie. Everyone around us was speaking German.

Nice meal for a little over 25 euro including a couple of beers and a glass of wine. I had the Pfannespezial (10.50)--pan of potatoes, beefsteak, and sunnyside-up eggs, plus a Dunkelbeir and a nice Pils. (In every town, I attempted to try 2 local beers at every meal except breakfast). Wife had salad with grilled chicken breast and bacon (9.50).

Munich is great. We went there last year for 4 days. Stayed at Hotel an Der Oper..great location. Also take a daytrip and go out to Fussen and see King Ludwig's castles. Also white asparagus will be in season and on all of the menus. Be sure to try it!

Thanks for all the posts I appreciate it. To answer Curious , I posed the question in a broad based manner to get all ideas. To answer your question my wife and I are going and enjoy a wide array of things. We have been to Europe quite a few times but never to Germany. Each time we went, out of all the guide books and advice we have received, we always done best with the Fodorites. So forgive the vagueness of the question. It does appear "clueless" on second read.

Do you wish to remain in Munich the entire week or get out and about for an hour or so by train or car.

Also, how old are you.

I have been to Munich more than once. Some of these ideas might help you get a better grip on what to do in the Munich area for 7 days.

I have been to Dachau on three occasions. Taking the entire tour and really soaking in what is in those museums can take up to an entire day.

Been to many of the beer gardens and beer halls. Stayed a bit longer than I should have, but had a great time, every time. The Augustiner Beer Garden is the best, food is excellent as well.

Don't drive, get on an S Bahn and head out to the Andechs monastery. I was there in October 2002. Alot of renovating being done. The monastery is something to see. The beer, many people claim is the best in all of Germany. I tend to agree that it is amongst the best. Give me a good Jever or Warsteiner and I am just as content!The meals thhey serve at Andech's ain't bad either!

Done the English Gardens, played frisbee with topless German women taking a break from sunbathing in the English gardens. Picnicked in the Gardens, doing the people watching thing. Lot's to see, might be somewhat of a culture shock if you are not prepared.

Walked the city for hours at a time simply doing the people watching thing.

Went to some of the various malls and museums.

Been to the Hofbrauhaus. Been to the Octoberfests.

I never been to any of the brewery tours. Don't know if there is a BMW factory or Mercedes tour available.

Never down any of the more mature things such as opera or musicals.

Have stayed in some really nice hotels, i.e. The Platzl. Stayed in a few youth hostels as well as some of the other accomodations throughout Munich, that weren't so nice.

Visited the red light district. Drank plenty of beer and wine, ate plenty of weisswursts.

Got outside of Munich and stayed in Garmisch. Did a trip to Tegernsee, south of Munich. Beautiful lake front town, 55 minutes by S-Bahn.

Left Munich and headed down towards Austria in a town called Kufstein. Continued further in 45 minutes to the area around St Johann

Took a bike tour in Munich with Bike with Mike.

Each time in Munich, I had a great time.

I'll be taking the train a few times this summer to work on adding to my list. Can't wait.

A few years back, we spent 6 nights in Munich. We stayed a couple blocks from the train station, because we planned on using the train abit. 1 day we did a bus tour of a couple of the King Ludwig castles. 1 day we took the train to Salzburg & walked around there for the day(castle was fantastic there), 1 day we took the bus up the Romantic Road, which stopped at a couple of the towns along the way & gave us a couple hours in each town & then took the train back to Munich. The other days we spent in Munich going through the historical sites - cathedrals, palaces, town hall, etc. Spent some time at farmers' market. Spent time at the Augustiner & even though touristy at the Hoffbrahaus. A just spent time at various outside venues, drinking, eating (pretzels with German mustard - fantastic) & watching people. & then just did some plain old shopping in some of the stores. Our flight out was early in the morning, so we got on the train & it took us right to the Munich airport.

One thing that I forgot to mention, but don't really know if this is still a thing to look into. Some of the places we went to eat to had menus in English & other menus in German. By using the German menus we seemed to get a more German type meal rather than just a German meal that was prepared for Americans. & the price on the German menus seemed to be abit better.

Hi, We just got back from Germany and stayed near Munich for 2 nites. Are you committed to staying IN Munich? If not, you may want to consider staying on Lake Starnberg in one of the small towns and taking a train in (under 1/2 hr). It may be cooler and more pleasant. We stayed in Tutzing and got in by train in about 25 minutes. You can also hop on a ferry that crisscrosses the lake and visit other small towns. We liked Munich but it is just a big city like many others and you will get more of the true flavor of Germany but visiting the smaller towns. One note on Munich - Sunday's the art museum is free to get into - don't know if that is always the case. Would definitely advocate a train trip down to Fussen to see Neuschwanstein.

Were 2 nights enough in Munich? Could you share the name/booking site for the hotel on the lake?

My family and I will be traveling from Vienna to Munich next month. (Rail/car?) We would like to rent a car to drive part of the Romantik Road, down to Fussen and take in some of the small towns/castles in southern Bavaria.

I appreciate your suggestions!

Here a couple of websites I found helpful - but more so if you speak or can read some German! www.tutzing24.de and click on hotel and pension. www.starnberg.de and click on "tourismous" and then "zimmernachweis" - actually lets you search on available hotels and gasthofs for particular days. Some of hotels will have English option. For an all English site look at www.bensbauernhof.com which is where I found B&B in Tutzing. If you look at the front of your Fodor's book it has a sample of how you can write/call for a room in German. This would be helpful in some of the smaller communities.

Message to CindiRed: There is a lot to see along the road from Vienna to Munich, so you should consider taking a car and stop for example in Salzburg or on the Chiemsee to see the castle "Herrenchiemsee". It depends how much time you have alltogether. " days for Munich is not very much, but of course you can see teh main attractions. About the question where to stay: of course the area of the Starnberger See is very nice, but it's a totally different thing than Munich. If you want to get a feeling fo the city you have to stay overnight and spend some time in the biergardens in the evening or in the numerous Kneipen.
