Itinerary help for Germany/Austria in May by car
We are picking up Porsche in Stuttgart in May. We are wanting to drive from Stuttgart for 12 days and then have to return to Stuttgart. We have looked at Konstanz, Ulm,Regensburg, Passau, Salzburg, Hallstatt, Innsburg, St. Gallen, Strasboug then back to Stuttgart. Does anyone have other areas or ideas for us to visit. Also interested in places to stay i.e. bed & breakfast places versus hotels.?

There are more places to see than you have days to see them. Without knowing more about your preferences, it's tough to advise you. If indeed these places you named are the places you firmly intend to visit and stay overnight, then I would simply comment that it's a pretty busy schedule. On the other hand, if you want to go to something new each day, as I usually do, this is one way to do it. However, if I were making a circular route from Stuttgart, I would visit the following places and stay overnight in some of them:
-In order: Ulm, Munich, Passau, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Lindau, back to Stuttgart. But your itinerary and destination selection looks OK too--but not exactly in the order you gave. Good luck. |
Wayne, thanks for your quick response. I'll take a look at the way we are going based on your feed back. Any thoughts regarding staying at bed & breakfasts vs. hotels. Have you stayed in Stuttgart?

I have stayed in B&B's in Germany and in private homes advertising "Zimmer frei" and have found them all to be pleasant. I don't think you would be displeased with B&B's unless you like extra luxury and round-the-clock service. No, I haven't stayed in Stuttgart before; I have always opted for smaller towns. On another recent post, I just mentioned some of my favorite smaller towns outside of Stuttgart. My most favorite is Schwabisch Hall, an absolute charmer with an incredibly lovely town square. Also nice are Schwabisch Gmund and Ludwigsburg. All three of those are an easy drive from Stuttgart. Good luck.

We took a somewhat similar route, staying in B&B's etc, but in 21 days. Some of my insights might be helpful to you found in my report here...
