Itinerary Finalizing

Okay, after months of working on this, I have it boiled down to this:

Arrive Munich 9/12 8:30AM
Stay in Munich until 9/18 (one night of Oktoberfest should be enough for us).
Depart 9/18 for Salzburg via train and see Chiemsee (probably Prien or Bernau).
Salzburg until 9/21.
Depart via train to Berchtesgarden for one night.
Pick up car in Berchtesgaden and depart 9/22 to Garmisch Partenkirchen for one night through Austria's A-12 to Lermoos.
Depart GP for Fuessen for one night.
Depart Fussen for Rothenburg for two nights.
Depart Rothenburg for Wurzburg for two nights. While in Rothenburg, travel to Bamberg to see the "Vienna of Germany".
Drop off car in Wurzburg and pick up train to Rudesheim. Pick up KD ferry to St. Goar for one night.
Depart St. Goar via train to Koblenz and take ferry (or train, if we miss ferry) to Cochem for two nights.
Depart via train (or ferry is we missed the ferry from Koblenz) to Koln for two nights.
Depart via train to Quindlinburg for one night.
Depart via train to Berlin for three nights.

My questions are:
1. This seems like a lot of movement-is it too much.
2. Getting to Quindlinburg seems like an all-dy affair if I read the bahn.de website correctly. Should I drop it?
3. Been thinking of dropping Cologne and adding times to Rhine/Mossel and Quindlinburg. Is that a good idea?

Thanks,

Keith

Just a few suggested "adjustments". I really don't think you need to spend 5 nights in Munich. You could skip one.

Suggest you pick up your car on the last day in Munich and drive the next morning to Berchtesgaden, with a stop at the Chiemsee (exit Bernau, road to Prien, Stock, where the boats for Herrenchiemsee leave).

Return to Bernau. but continue on thr road you are on (B-305) to Grassau, Reit i. Winkel, Fritz am Sand (I mention this, because shortly thereafter, the B-305 makes a sharp right turn) to Schneizlreut, Berchtesgaden and Salzburg. Use one day in Salzburg to return to Berchtesgaden to do the "sights" there - - - Kehlsteinhaus (Eagles Nest), Koenigsee, perhaps salt mine)

After Salzburg, buy yourself an Austrian autobahnuser decal (it's a must, don't leave without it; at any gas station) and either take the Salzburg Munich autobahn (A-8) as far as the Dreieck Inntal (Exit 101)and continue on the A-93/Austrian A-12 to Woergl and past Innsbruck to exit 87 (Zirl), and continue north on the Austrian B-177/German B-2 to Garmisch.

OR, From Sakzburg go back to Berchtesgaden and Schneizlreut, but continue from there on the Austrian B-12 to Lofer,St. Johann and Woergl and get on the A-12 there. The rest as above.

Taking the train on 9/18 from Munich to Prien and Salzburg is OK, but taking the train from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden is awkward. There are busses. But the above Deutsche Alpenstrasse stretch Bernau - Berchtesgaden is very scenic.

You get to Leermoos AFTER Garmisch, on your way to Fuessen.

I personally would skip Bamberg. It's nice, but a bit disappoining after Wuerzburg.

So, "do" Rothenburg as planned ; if you have time, on your way from Fuessen, get off the autobahn at the Dinkelsbuehl exit (#113), and take the regular road Dinkelsbuehl to Rothenburg. I think D. is as pretty as R., but not so overrun by tourists as R.

Drop off your car in Wzbg. You won't need it there for sightseeing. Be sure to see the interior of the Residenz (downtown), the castle Marienberg overlooking the city, and one of the wine stuben (Julius Spital, Buerger Spital) I was born in Wzbg.

You don;t want a "ferry" on the Rhein, but a "Schiff" der KD.

I probably would skip Koeln, certainly would not stay there for 2 nights. You can see the cathedral and the museum next to it during a 2 hrs. "layover" in Koeln. They are a 2 minutes walk from the RR station. I worked in K. for Ford.

Spend the "gained" time along the Mosel. Trier is a very interesting city. There is quite a scenic train ride from Koeln to Trier. You then can take a boat to Cochem, with perhaps a stop in Beilstein.

Can't advise you on Quedlinburg, have never been there.

treplow has given you some very good suggestions. One problem w/ his comments though. He suggests leaving Munich one day early - unfortunately Sept 17 is the first night of Oktoberfest, so if you leave town on the 17th you will miss it.

It would be a shame to miss the fun - but I agree w/ you one night is enough. So I'd keep your current plan of 6 nights in Munich.

Sorry about my mistake re Sept.17. I haven't kept up with the exact opening date of the Oktoberfest. Been there many times when I studied in Munich, so it's off my radar now. By all means, you should stay that day, if for no other reason than seeing the big Oktoberfest parade. It's lots of fun, and great photo ops.

Hi Treplow,

you have given sound advice to me and many others over the years, I am sure all that information shared has been as appreciated as I feel.

I have been toying with the idea of dropping Fussen for an overnight, as Mom cannot do the Schloss Neuschwanstein tour anywaty (too many stairs). So, I was thinking of departing from GP and go to the Mary's Bridge Overlook and then head up to Wies church and onto Rothenburg.

Make sense??

Well, different strokes for different folks, but we liked Bamberg better than Wuerzburg.
