Itinerary: Alesund to Bergen, or round-trip from Bergen?

We are a couple in our 30s, interested in hiking, scenery, and visiting sites (churches, towns).

We have 4-5 days to visit the western fjords in mid-June and are trying to decide how to divide our time. We will be coming from 3-4 days in Lofoten. Our options are:

1) Fly from Bodo to Alesund on Tuesday afternoon. Rent a car and make our way from Alesund to Bergen, seeing sites in the Geiranger area, maybe Jostedalsbreen, Lustrafjord, and Naeroyfjord areas. Fly out of Bergen late Sunday afternoon. (We would have five nights to split among these areas, likely sleeping Alesund Tuesday night and possibly Bergen Saturday night.) OR:

2) Fly from Bodo to Bergen on Tuesday afternoon, and do a round-trip driving trip from Bergen into Sognefjorden. (We would drive into the fjords Tuesday evening.)

Questions:

First, is it worth trying to see the Geiranger region? Or will we lose a lot of travel time, without gaining much in terms of variety of scenery/experience?

Second, if we do the round-trip in Sognefjorden, where should we base ourselves? Would it make sense to stay in Balestrand or Solvorn the whole time, or should we split between multiple areas (e.g. split with something like Aurland)? Any suggestions on a 4-day itinerary for that region (Weds-Sat full days)? We will want to hike, get out on the water, and see sites. We prefer places that are less crowded even if slightly less stunning, rather than places that are considered the most beautiful but overrun by tourists.
