itinerary advice northern Italy
Traveling with my family this summer. Will be flying in and out of Milan. We will take the train to Rome and spend four days, southern Tuscany for four days then have four days until we fly out. I want to work our way north and need advice on place(s) to stay. Venice is a choice but I don't know areas north of Tuscany at all. We are interested in site seeing and good food but before we leave relaxation somewhere may be welcomed. Ability to travel back to Milan is important. Our children are 18 and 14.

Hi pier --
The lakes are only about an hour from Milan. You might want to look into Varenna, Bellagio or Menaggio (all on Lake Como) for accommodations. I'd suggest booking quickly, though. We are going in May, and when I booked a month or so ago, most places are already booked!

I assume you already have your tickets. But, if by chance not, why fly into Milan when you don't want to go there or any place nearby? You could fly into Venice and out of Rome. Relax in the middle in southern Tuscany. (For the latter it's much easier to get around with a car.)
