Itineary for Rome and Amalifi Coast
 

My husband and I are going to Rome between March 29th and April 11,2008.We have rented an apartment in Rome but would like to spend a few days at the Amalfi Coast and possibily Tuscany. Do you have any suggestions on where is the best town in Amalfi(thinking Sorrento) and do we have time to go to the Tuscany area?

Sorrento is not technicaly on the Amalfi coast although it is often discussed as such. It makes a good base if you want to visit Pompeii. If not, Amalfi and Positano are more popular options...there have been many, many posts on the "best" base. If you do a search for the same, you can find varying opinions.

I am planning to return to the area after an absence of many years. I chose to stay in the town of Amalfi..

For a trip of that duration, I would find that including Tuscany would not be the best idea..but then, I would rather spend more time at one or two bases than rush from place to place. So..yes, you COULD include Tuscany. I would not recommend doing so. How long will you spend in Rome?

I would skip Sorrento and head further down the coast. Many like Positano but I find it too touristy, crowded, etc. We like Praiano, halfway between Positano and Amalfi. Amalfi is a very nice town also.

We have both been to Rome before and seen most of the sights but love the city and want a little time to explore more (Campo di fiori) so we thought to maybe just spend 3 days in Amalfi?

In my opinion, having been to Sorrento a couple of times, it has little to offer what most people want in a vacation destination. It is VERY, VERY, crowded, and I just don't think it has much in the way of places people want to see or stay. It's on the Sorrento Coast, not the Amalfi Coast, and getting to the Amalfi Coast is a long bus ride.
It's just my opinion. I've talked to a lot of people who have gone to Sorrento and also been underwhelmed.
That's fine if anyone wants to go there, but having just been there in October, the tremendous garbage piles didn't impress me once again.

Amalfi is THE historical town on the Amalfi coast. There you find the gosgeous cathedral ( in Byzantine style), the ancient shipyards, a picturesque market.

Amalfi is historically very significant, being one of the marine republics of the mediterranean (together with Venice and Genova). I would prefer staying there (I have stayed in more touristy towns like Positano, but Amalfi is the real thing).

To enjoy the Amalfi coast, you should drive a car (or a scooter). Public transport is only half as fun.

The Amalfi coast offers one of the most dramatic scenic drives in the world.

Hotel Margherita is a great place in Praiano, great price and great service.

Traveler, when did you stay at Luna Convento? I read quite a few less-than-gushing reviews on TA and wondered if you would fill me in a little about your stay there if you have the time... I do not care about a pool since we will be there to early to swim (I think..early May) I know some choose the hotel partly for the pool so I will mention that last bit..
