Itenerary Opinion

So I've been doing a lot of research and wanted to get ya'll's opinion on my trip to Europe for May/June of 2016. Wanted to plan ahead and make sure I have everything planned correctly! So I have a couple of questions. I wanted to see if I should travel or see anything else on my trip. I've already been to Florence, Rome, Barcelona, but going back to show my friend I'm going with who has never been. Other than that haven't traveled anywhere else. Should I travel to London instead or maybe save that for another trip etc.? Also is this good for estimating travel time?

Another question is that the a lot of my night trains are not covered by Euro Rail Pass. Should I still get it then?

You should check to see what the cost is for single tickets from one destination to the next two or three months ahead of time; that may be cheaper than a rail pass (we found tickets one year from Florence to Zurich for 25€ per person).

Thanks! I'll check it out. Any advice on my itinerary?

Are you sure that there are night trains for all the times you have chosen to use them?

I used rome2rio.com and then just double checked everything after you had mentioned it and yeap they all exist. Now some definitely have some strange times like 4AM the depart but I'll just have a LONG night then haha

One point - you need to do some research on these "night trains". I don;t believe that they exist in all places you have listed.

For instance, Rome to Venice is less than 4 hours on fast trains and there is no through overnight train - you would have to change trains in the early hours of the morning - meaning missing a good part of a night's sleep.

Similarly night trains from Salzburg to Prague are very long (12 hours plus) with multiple changes of train during the night - while the fast trains take only about 6 hours during the day.

Obviously you can get from one place to another overnight night - but often not a real night train in which you can sleep and often taking much longer than necessary.

If doing all that by train investigate some kind of railpass - great info on trains and planning the rail part of the trip: www.budgeteuropetravel.com; www.ricksteves.com and www.seat61.com.

To be clear by night train I mean they simply are at night whether they have a bed for me to sleep I'm unclear. I'll be sure to look into it more though thanks for all of the info!

A direct night train can be sweet but on some night rail connections with regular trains you may have to switch in the middle of the night - like Salzburg to Prague you have to change 2 or 3 times - not fun and that is a relatively short day journey - I love night trains but not staying up all night transferring trains, etc.

Prague to Berlin for example at night - requires 3-4 or even 5 changes of train and takes 11-12 hours all told - meaning you will be sleeping on benches in stations mainly over 5 hours about in the daytime by direct train. Just needs a bit of more research to see what is practical and what is just plain impractical!

Check www.bahn.de/en - the German Railways official site for scheudles and timings for all European trains.
