The other major day trip from Lucerne goes up (and down hopefully) Mt Pilatus - Lucerne's mountain that, on to me the rare clear day when i've been there, hovers majestically over town. If there is a clear day then ascending (and hopefully descending Mt Pilatus is a thrill) - you can take a lake boat to Alpnachstad and then take one of the world's most exhilarating mountain-climbing trains up to the Pilatus summit and then hop an equally exhilarating aerial cableway back to suburban Lucerne, Krens i believe it is, from where city buses take you back to the town center.

A third fantastic day trip from Lucerne goes to Engleberg, a dreamy Alpine town at the foot of ice-girdled Mt Titlis, right up there with the Jungfrau and Matterhorn peaks in fame- Engleberg is an Alpine resort on a par with Zermatt and those in the Interlaken-Jungfrau region - a myriad of aerial cable ways, etc.take you from the town up to the icy envrions of Mt Titlis

Engleberg can't be more than an hour from Lucerne - you can also mix in a boat ride on Lake Lucerne by boating to a station on the Lucerne-Engleberg rail line - Stans i'm thinking but not sure
