Italy with Mom - how are these hotels?

My mother-in-law are going to Italy in May, 2001. I know you dislike tours, but it it the only feasible way we can manage luggage, etc., we are looking into Far & Wide, Central Holidays tours, the listed hotels are Rome - Visconti Palace - Florene - Londra or Anglo American - Venice - Saturnia or Quattro Fontane, Sorrento - Sorento Palace. Any feed back would be appreciated.

Good afternon, Denise
Will reply to those hotels which we
have used over the years. Stayed at
the Anglo American in Firenze back in
the 70's, was a very nice hotel about
three blocks west of the Ponte Vecchio
in a fairly quiete neighborhood. Also
stayed at the Sorrento Palace about the
same year of the Anglo American. It was
a very nice 4 star hotel just located
very close to the Pza Tasso, the center
of Sorrento. We have used the Hotel
Saturnia on our last two trips to Venice
and am returning there in November,
a very good hotel on service and
accomodations and within two blocks
of the Pza S. Marco. One remark, I
might make relative to good hotels
and tours, do not expect to find the
quality of room as you would as if you
were going into it on your own, I think
you will find that the hotels have client and tourist class. The tour
which you picked all have these hotels
which are in good locations, some put
you way out in the boondocks. Have a
good trip. Richard of La Grange PaRK, Il. p[s check www.. and for information on
the other hotels.. rjv

the Londra in Florence is a decent hotel, about 2 blocks from the railroad station. The area is convenient and safe. A lot of businesspeople stay there. Also it is used often by tour groups. (A Perillo group was there when we stayed there.)

Hi Denise,
We stayed at the Visconti Palace in 1994 and 1997. It had been remodeled and updated on our second visit. We were satisfied with the location, the staff was gracious, and the hotel very clean. It is frequented by tour groups (American Express when we were there) but I would still recommend it. Enjoy your trip.

Visconti Palace is a pretty decent 3-star or 4-star hotel but not at all well located for sightseeing or restaurants. Sorry to say, typical for most mid- to lower-end tour packages.

Denise, especially this year in Rome, it is difficult to get buses into the city....We have been to Rome twice, once with a tour and this past May,on our own. Do not let the location of your hotel be a problem to you. Taxis are cheap and plentiful. I always write my hotel and address on a card to show the driver, just in case...Take the taxi into the center, where ever you want to be and's the thing to do in Roma...We love Italy. Your trip sounds great, the hotels very good for a tour...enjoy!!!
