Our kids are now adults but we travelled frequently with them from the time they were infants. You can get lots from books but here is some personal stuff and I am sure others will chime in.
1. Babies inner ears are particularly sensitive to ascents and descents in airplanes and it helps if they can get into a sucking and swallowing routine during those times i.e. bottle with liquid or breastfeeding, not just pacifier.
2. On site, remember that kids also experience jet lag and can't figure out what time it is for sleeping and waking: adjust them IN ADVANCE of trip as much as possible to the time difference of the new country.
3. Bring food that your child is used to even if you have been assured its the same, its not exactly the same formulation.
4. Relax and have fun as baby takes her cues from you!

There is also a thread about travelling to England with a 7 month old that offers some suggestions on flying with babies and things to bring. might want to check that out, even though it doesn't specifically apply to Italy.

Bring a fold up highchair(no high chairs) Bring a tray that snaps on the front of the carriage. Bring a good fold up arriage that also folds down to let your child sleep(we got allof these things of the internet and they made traveling alot!!!!! easier) Learn how to change a diaper in the carriage. No changing areas. Also travel a day-then next day stay local- around the pool if your villa has one. Our kids loved all the juices over there. Hope this helps-have fun!!!
