I'm heading to Rome for the World Equestrian Games in late Sept/early Oct. We are going three days early and have decided on the Amalfi Coast area to spend it in. My friend wants to stay in Positano, she heard from friends it was great, at the Poseidon. Is anyone familiar with this area? Is it the best spot to choose? Anyone familiar with this hotel? Thanks.

I have to recommend the following however you can get there...Venice(I love that city!), The Lakes(just beautiful!), and then Tuscany. Venice is worth about 3 days, if you want to get around to islands as well as the city. The Lakes are a place to relax and enjoy the view, stroll along lakeside walkways and don't try to rush around! Tuscany is a region where there are many beautiful places to see. Most are within a couple hours drive from one another. Places I've enjoyed there are Sienna(a bit touristy, though), Volterra ( a not so well known beautiful castle town! Have to buy alabaster there!), and San Gimignano. The rolling hills through this area are absolutely breathtaking! In Volterra there are also some Roman ruins to see. And a few etruscan museums that are very interesting. Hope you have a great time!

Hi- I've just read all the messages here and found that i have to disagree with some. I returned yesterday from a two month trip to Europe. My favorite place of my trip was to town of Riomaggiore in the Cinque Terre- it was absoultely wonderful. We rented an apartment for 4 nights for 40,000 Lira a person. Cinque Terre also had the best wine and food of our trip. I also enjoyed Venice- i agree with skipping the gondola rides. I would suggest taking a ride on the #1 vaporetta around the canals- an inexpensive way to see the beautiful city. Also, a visit to the Peggy Guggenheim Museum is a must. I was not too fond of Florence. The waiting line to the Uffizi was over 2 hours long and it was a disappointment. Have fun in Italy! Feel free to email me directly if you have any questions.
Ciao! Stacy
If I had 3 weeks in Italy, I would spend them at these places:

Places to relax and enjoy the views:
Assisi - peaceful, breathtaking landscape
The Lakes (Lake Como) - nature at its finest
Capri - sparkling Mediterranean sea, white cliffs

Places to see/do something:
Siena - I liked it much better than Florence, less touristy, has a more preserved medieval look
Rome - wonderful monuments (Colosseum), museums (Vatican - Raphael Rooms and Sistine Chapel) and churches (St. Peter's Basilica)
Florence - wonderful architecture and sculpture (Duomo, David)

I didn't like Venice - smelly canals, overpriced food and too many people!

Just got back for a week-plus in Italy. Read "Under the Tuscan Sun" and go visit all the towns Frances Mayes mentions. It is a great experience. Loved Cortona-wish I had stayed there.
I didn't enjoy Venice but loved Padova. DON'T drive in Florence!!!! Almost lost my mind there!

Just read Bob the Navigator's comment above that it would take 6 weeks to see all Italy. Well those 6 weeks would have to be very rushed. I spent 2 months in Italy 2 years ago and didn't see nearly all the country. I've also been there on 2 other occasions and still haven't seen Bologna, Turin, Ravenna, Sardinia just to name A FEW!!!
