Italy: What do you think about Spoleto?

Looking for rants and raves, good to know info and recommendations on things to do and see, places to eat and moderate hotels
(dbl 80-140E).

Thought it might be a good base to explore Trevi, Assisi, and Spello via train. Where else might I go via train or bus?

Also looking for views, flowers and maybe some opportunities for hiking, vineyards, olive orchards?

If able to only do one, would it be Spello or Spoleto? I'm leaning towards Spello.

I'm planning a spring trip now so if you look for my posts you'll see some info. What I'm discovering (or being told) is that Spello is a much more charming town than Spoleto.

I have been to both. My own preference was Spoleto. I just think there was more things to see in Spoleto. I went to Spello with tour guide Anne Robichaud and Spoleto on my own. Took train to Spoleto then cab into center where my hotel was located. Took a beautiful walk around outskirts of the town and vista after vista of duomo and fortress and torri bridge just made me take picture after picture and town park was good walk.

there are some images:

Hopefully this helps you get a feel of what to expect in Spoleto. I did not spend night in Spello but did in Spoleto. I stayed at Hotel Aurora because I liked its location. It was quiet and 60 euro for a double when I was there. It was a good stop before Rome and after Assisi. Spello would work also but since I was staying in Assisi and Spello is only about 10 km away it worked better for a day trip. Spoleto is also larger town than Spello so if your goal is a smaller town I would go for Spello.
