Italy Vacation

Planning a trip to Italy with some frineds....just in the preliminary planning stages. What time of year do you recommend going? Also, is it better to go on a tour or try to set up our own travel arrangements? Any suggestions would be helpful.

I would go in early May or late September for the weather and lessened crowds.

Whether to go on your own or with a tour group depends on the ages and physical/mental/planning abilities of the people in your party--and your budget.

I agree April-May or Sept-Oct are the best times to go. We have been 3 times and have always done it on our own. There is soooo much information on the web you can easily do everything that way. Just start out with a few good guidebooks and maps to rough things out, then spend many hours on the web researching flights and hotels. Have you checked out slowtrav, com, venere.com, italyby.com & tripadvisor, com?

It would be so nice if there were some kind of guidelines for posts like this.

Nikegirl: It's not your fault, but you'll get much better advice if you're more specific.

Please tell us:

--How long? Don't count travel days...tell us how many days/nights you plan IN Italy.
--How many friends? Another couple or 10 women? All first-timers?
--What do you want to see/do? Art? Churches? Beaches? Great food/wine? Countryside? Drive or trains?

If you haven't hit the library, do so and check out several travel books/films on Italy. It may be too early for you to discuss budget. But you probably have some idea whether it will be on a shoestring or more upscale.
