Italy - upcoming transportation strike Sept 21
Read this on another travel website. Will Trenitalia be affected? We planned on taking the early train to Florence to visit the Accademia. Already bought Accademia tickets, will they honor them the next day? My guess is "no", but I thought I would ask!

Hi,
Where did you hear about a transportation strike?!!! Is it only on Sept 21 or what? We will be in Italy Sept 21 - Oct 3rd and plan on traveling to Florence, Venice, Sienna and area. Is it the trains and buses??? Any information anyone has is welcomed!! Laura |
I saw it on the tripadvisor message board. I understand it is only on the 21st.

Check with Trenitalia.com, they usually post messages with information on strikes and other disruptions.

The strike on 9/21 is for city busses and metro not trains. The Accademia is an easy walk from the Florence train station so you should be fine.

Don't be surprised if they only strike for 8 hrs. The last 2 24hr local transport strikes that happened when I was in Rome were only 8hrs. Or they might cancel them.
I recall one went from 1000-1800 and the other one was on a day I was going on a ContextRome Pompeii tour. I mentioned the 24hr strike to the guide and she said that they were splitting the strike up, 4hrs after the morning rush and 4hrs after the evening rush. Monica as kybourbon said it's a short walk, my hotel was near the train station and I walked everywhere, figure ~20min. Basically all the tourist sites are within 1sq/mi-1.6sq/km of the train station. But you might want to ask your hotel if you will have any problems getting to the train station early, taxis will be very busy that day if the strike is on. Regards, Walter |
