Italy Travel Help

My wife and I are traveling to Italy for a week in late May. We have a few HOLES in our schedule and were hoping some of you seasoned travels could help and/or make some suggestions.

We're making Rome and Florence are bases and trying to do side/day or night trips from there. Please advise!! We decided to skip Venice this trip because of time. Thanks.

Saturday Night - Arrive in Rome
Sunday - Rome
Monday - Rome
?Tuesday - Rome - Can we/Should we go to Capri for the day? Can you make it a day trip?
Wednesday - Florence
Thursday - Florence
Friday - Florence (Day/night in Siena??)
Saturday - Go back to Rome - stop in San Gimignanao or Chiusi??)
Sunday morning - Fly out of Rome

Any info would be appreciated. Right now we are scheduled to leave Rome on Tuesday and have no reservations on Friday or Saturday night. I think we need another night in Rome so we can go to Capri.

Thanks! The Nathans

Hi,

You can get to Capri for a daytrip, but it is a verrry long day.

Take the ES* train to Naples. Get the hydrofoil to Capri at the Mergellina dock (See http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34484103)

I think the last hydrofoil back will be about 6:00 PM.

I would suggest visiting the archaeological site at Ostia Antica.

Siena makes a very nice daytrip from Florence. Many people recommend staying overnight.

On your way back to Rome, you might want to stop in Orvieto.

I would not advise going to Capri for a day. It's about two and a half hours to Naples, then about another hour on a ferry or hydrofoil to Capri. And this is only if there are no travel delays or cancellations!

Either save Capri for the next trip, or cut out Florence and visit Capri/Amalfi (could base in Sorrento with day trips to: Positano, Amalfi, Ravello) instead.

Good luck!

With 7 days do 2 destinations, and I would make Rome the last stop, not the first. If Florence then start there and day trip to Siena one day.

Thanks for everyone's advice.

We decided to try to stay in Siena overnight on Friday and head back to Rome on Saturday.

Ira...have you ever heard of the Rossi Estate? I posted a message about it. I think you can go there and cook pasta, drink wine, etc. Let me know. Thanks.

Hi MZ,

I saw your post. Sorry can't help.

I do all of my pasta cooking at home. :)
