Italy -- Travel from Brunico to San Cassiana

Two questions
I plan to travel by train from Venice to the train station closest to the ski area at San Cassiana, (in the Dolomites). Any recommendation on how to get from Brunico to San Cassiana? Are there cabs / buses / shuttle?

Secondly -- any recommendations on where to stay in San Cassiana?

Skiitaly - San Cassiano? Lucky you! The American ambassador's home-from-home - you could stay at his place

But ... why go via Brunico? It's a long way round from Venice - you'd spend most of the day travelling.

It would probably be quicker to go via CORTINA - there's a Venice-Cortina bus service in the ski season.

Here's the link:
http://www.atvo.it/eng/cortina.php

From Cortina you could go by taxi to SAN CASSIANO - assuming the Falzarego/Valparola pass is open.

From Cortina there is actually a skibus service up to Falzarego and another one down to San Cassiano. IF they allow luggage you could do it that way.

If you especially have to go via BRUNICO there is an Alta Badia bus service (- operator SAD) from Brunico up to CORVARA.
http://www.sii.bz.it/

Not sure if there is a connection from La Villa-in-Badia to SAN CASSIANO. There isn't one listed on the SAD website - but there may be a local service. If not you'd have to get a taxi from La Villa ... or Corvara.

Let me know if I can be of more help ...

Steve

Special request ... to anyone who sees this -

Please top it if you see it's out of the top 50.

The OP's new ... so maybe didn't find it.

Thankyou

Steve

Thanks Steve. I'll definitely check out the suggested web sites. I was looking at the train schedule because it seemed to allow me to spend 2/3's of the day in Venice -- leave late afternoon -- and get me to Brunico around 10:00 pm that night. They may have a different winter schedule for the bus -- but it looks like they leave around 8:00 in the morning from Venice. My concern with getting into Brunico so late was / is -- would there be bus or cab from the train station?

Also -- as a newbie to this site -- what does ttt mean?

I don't think the SAD busses run that late from Brunico. The schedule shows the last one departing the train station at 8:11 pm. I recall my "Val BAdia" newsletter from last winter mentioning a shuttle bus that ran in the evenings, after the SAD bussess stopped, during ski season. But I believe it just covered the ski areas, and did not go as far down the valley as Brunico.

Perhaps you should ask your hotel, or change your plans as Steve James suggests and take the bus to Cortina, even if that means leaving Venice earlier.

I think Enzian's right - I'm sure the Val Badia bus won't run that late.

If you want to spend half the day in Venice, I suggest you change plan - and go to another ski resort instead of San Cassiano.

How about Ortisei, Val Gardena? One of the best ski areas in Italy ... and perhaps my favourite village in the Dolomites

You could leave Venice mid afternoon (15.17) and get to Bolzano at 18.29.

You could then catch the last bus (19.22) up to Ortisei.

I believe Val Gardena's a better ski area anyway, with some great lifts up to some of the most fantastic scenery in the Dolomites. Have a look:

If you're interested here's the Gardena website:

Thanks Steve & Enzian!
Steve -- you've convinced me -- I'll head to Ortisei via Bolzano. Do you also have ski recommendations for the Milky Way area -- my plan is 3 days in the Dolomites -- a couple days to recover in Milan -- than Sauze d' Oulx. Any thoughts?

Ski - I can't help you there I'm afraid.

If you post a new thread about the Milky Way I'm sure others can help ...

I hope you will love Ortisei/ Val Gardena as much as me

Brunico has its own beautiful ski area - Plan de Corones near just up the hill from the town. My grandmother lives in Brunico and I have been many times. One of the most beautiful places on the planet.
