Italy, transport from Assiso to Cita di castello
 

Hi this is for those who know the Umbria region well
How can I get to Cita Di castello for a day trip from Assisi (leaving from S.Maria degli Angeli station)
From what I have researched on older forums (cant see anything recent):
Do I catch train from Assisi to Arezzo, then a bus to Cita Di Castello??
Is this an option/the only option?
It is a day trip, so will be looking at getting back to Assisi in the evening

That's quite a day trip, close to 2.5 hours.

Try trenitalia.com. According to Rome2Rio.com train is your best bet, transferring in Perugia.

If you try trenitalia.com, be sure to use the correct spellings (it doesn't work well otherwise): Assisi, and Citta di Castello.

You could do the drive in an hour. Beautiful roads and countryside, plus an easy highway.

Tricky to do in a day, buses take three, four and more hours, with several switches needed.

It spells Città Di Castello.

From Assisi (Piazza Matteotti) there is a bus E007 that takes 1:09 to get to Perugia (Autostazione Piazza Partigiani), then it's bus F021 (56 mins, 56 stops!) to Umbertide Stazione, you walk to Via Garibaldi and catch bus E119 that arrives at Città Di Castello (Piazza Gaaribaldi) 31 minutes (41 stops) later.

I don't see a train station in Città di Castello. There is a Via della Stazione, but it leads to two bus stops only. Trains go to Arezzo, buses from there. A regional train line goes from Terni to Sansepolcro but I don't see how of if it actually touches Citta di Castello.

Go with the previous poster's advice and get a car or ask how much a car with driver would be if it important to you. Might have to go to Perugia for the car.

Yes, Città di castello has a station at Piazza della Stazione on the Sansepolcro-Terni local line. The line crosses the national railway system at Perugia Ponte San Giovanni (not the main Perugia station). So it is possible, if not very convenient, to do the trip by rail.

Wow!! Thanks so much for such a detailed response...very very helpful. If we do drive....what towns would you suggest we pop into on route that are worth checking out.

I would strongly urge you to have a car at your disposal during your time in Umbria. While trains and busses are options, IME the region is far more accessible with a car.

Assuming you do drive, I would suggest heading straight to Citta di Castello first thing in the morning. You'll presumably get there mid morning and will have time to tour the town and have lunch. You'll find that most Umbrian towns shut down after lunch so bear that in mind. Use the time after lunch to drive to another town such that you arrive when things are starting to reopen mid-afternoon. Where would depend on your interests, but I would suggest Gubbio--which is about a 50-minute drive from Citte di Castello. The scenery should be lovely. Visit the civic museum (the Museo Civico di Palazzo dei Consoli). It reopens in the afternoon at 2:30. Tour the Cathedral; have a walk around the well preserved town.

But there are certainly other options. You could head into Perugia (not my favorite; I prefer the region's smaller towns) or drive a bit further to Deruta (great ceramcis), Bevagna or Montefalco.
