Arriving Rome FCO on a Sunday, 9/19 and need to get to Sorrento same day. Any recommendations for train travel FCO - Naples/Sorrento? Have searched around but am a bit confused...if anyone reading this has made this trip by rail - please help!! Perhaps someone knows of a reasonable car service Rome-Naples as another option??? Any tips or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Train from Rome to Naples.

You can also go downstairs and walk to the Circumvesuviana station for the train to Sorrento - about 10E.

You catch the Leonardo Express train from Rome FCO (9.5 E - 30 minutes) (http://www.adr.it/content.asp?Subc=1...&idMen=731) to Rome Termini station. At Rome Termini you can catch an IC train or Eurostar train (www.trenitalia.it)to Naples (2nd class Eurostar 22.50E - 2 hours). Change lines in Naples to the Circumvesuviana train line(downstairs in the Naples station) to Sorrento (www.vesuviana.it) 3.1E and about 1 hour.

kybourbon - Hi there! Thank you, thank you...great help...sounds like you've done this before!! Can you also share approx how long it took to clear customs and make the Leonardo Express? How much time should we allow? Trying to figure out how much time to allow from FCO to Termini...or which train to catch from Termini to Naples...we arrive FCO at 9:00am and there's a train leaving Rome to Naples at 11:30...any chance we'll make it or should we allow more time??? Can we purchase the FCO-Rom tickets at the airport or on the train? Thanks for your help!!

You can book the Rome to Naples Eurostar train when you are buying your FCO to Rome Leonardo Express tickets at the airport. It took us about an hour last June to get our luggage, etc. at FCO but planes can be late so just book it when you get to the train station. The Leonardo departs every 30 minutes and takes 35 minutes but when you get to Termini you have a long walk to the Eurostar train. Use the search feature and you will turn up many threads on how long it takes various people. The train ticket purchase lines may be shorter at the airport than at Termini.

I used the Eurostar 2nd class from Termini to Naples which has seating (2 facing 2)with tables in between. Also has a snack/dining car so you can buy drinks etc. The IC trains aren't as nice but are almost as fast and are cheaper - 16.5E 2nd class.

The Circumvesuviana is a commuter train similar to a subway and makes many brief stops between Naples and Sorrento. You will have to drag your luggage down the stairs to catch the train. Some trains you can get discounts if you have more than 5 people traveling together.

Hi Kybourbon - you're a wealth of info!! On the heels of a long flight, it's beginning to sound like a lot of hassle...just may have to opt for car/driver from FCO! The differnce in fare might well be worth it...

And I'm not being a princess I just have a very bad back...I'm worried that all that "luggin" could be disaster!

We're staying in Sorrento for 6 nights - then returning to Rome for 2 or 3. Rather quick trip, but something's better than nothing! This is our first trip to the area - we're invited to stay at a friends rental in Sorrento...not sure exact address as of yet...so anyone that has insiders tips or "must dos" for the area - please share!
