When purchasing rail tickets online I am having trouble with the delivery aspect: I am trying for home delivery and when I fill out my address what do I enter for Civic N and what do I enter for Provence? I am from Indianapolis, IN Thanks

Which website are you using? Don't expect Trenitalia to deliver outside Italy.

Why do you need home delivery? If you purchase from the official Italian rail site

you can go ticketless. You will receive your ticket confirmation/reservation number via email. Print that email and show it to the ticket-taker on the train.

A warning: many have difficulty actually getting a transaction to be completed at the Trenitalia site. In 20 trips, I've always waited until I reached Italy to buy my tickets and never had a problem.

The Trenitalia site does not accept North American credit cards. Buy your tickets when you get to Italy. Your credit card will work in the ticket machines at major stations or you can present it to an agent at a ticket booth.

Amica fares (20% discount) are sold for fast trains, but not for cheap regional trains. If any of the allotted number of seats are still available, you can get Amica fares up to midnight of the day before departure.

What is Civic N? Trenitalia is the Italian trains website. They don't mail to the US. If you are buying from a reseller company such as RailEurope you are overpaying. They markup the price of the tickets and then charge a big fee to mail them. If you want to see prices for a ticket on Trenitalia, you need to enter dates within 60 days (Trenitalia doesn't let you buy more than 60 days in advance). If the route includes slower trains (R, IR, D) then enter a date within the next 7 days to get a price

RonJohn - the above replies all are on the money - in general, but maybe not in particular relating to your specific needs. What are these specific needs of yours, exactly?

Travel date, time, departure and arrival location - and what have you tried exactly that didn't work?

I have been traveling by train through Italy since 1971. Last trip was October 2008. I see ZERO advantage to buying tickets online...especially in light of the fact that the Trenitalia site has to be one of the most user-unfriendly sites ever designed. Anyway, it's so ridiculously easy to get your tickets while you're there.

What I do use the site for is to get schedules, which I print out and use while traveling. (In "the old days" we had to schlep those cumbersome Thomas Cook train schedule books all over the place.)

"Civic N." is the number of home address; Barack Obama should enter "1600" now...
"Provincia" is the italian territorial and administrative division, similar to "County" in USA. If this data is mandatory it means that it is impossible to complete tha transaction outside Italy.

Sometimes the advantage of bying your tickets online and in advance is that you can get a better price with the 'Amica' fare.

Use the ticketless option.

They send you an email with a confirmation number.

You show that to the conducctor, along with your passport.

Just in case, have the same credit card used to purchase the tickets with you.

I say it again. The Trenitalia site does not accept North American credit cards. ira suggests the ticketless option. IF (a very big "if") the Trenitalia call center will accept your card, then you could book by phone and choose the ticketless option. See this page: http://tinyurl.com/anr5jo.

Trenitalia does accept some American credit cards, but it's hit and miss. I always wait and purchase in Italy, but another option is to have your hotel book your tickets.

I have a US credit card and have had good success purchasing tickets on trenitalia.com with my US Citibank MasterCard. I use the virtual card # you can get from the Citibank website once you login. Check if your card issuer has a similar feature.

I think it is more accurate to say, "The Trenitalia site does not ALWAYS accept North American credit cards".
