Italy tomorrow
 

Flying to Rome tomorrow, then onto Sorrento, Capri, Amalfi, just for a week.

Two questions, and as always apologies for asking the same questions that have been asked a million times.

first, I read that the attire in Italy or Rome or Amalfi is not shorts, not as casual as it is in New York(?), and is that so? Just going for one week, so expecting to bring jeans, a sport jacket and a bunch of short sleeve button down shirts. Are nice jeans o.k?

second, while I might use credit cards mostly, should I buy euros at JFK or at the Rome Airport or at my new york bank (actually I recall buying euros for my daughter and I had to order them!)

Jeans are definitely OK. Depending on the weather, you'll likely see people wearing shorts on Capri and the Amalfi Coast area and perhaps even in Rome, but there are places (mostly churches but also some restaurants) where shorts would not be acceptable attire.

Most people recommend getting euros from an ATM after you land in Rome. A currency exchange office in either airport will probably charge you a higher rate.

Short on the AC are fine if you are touring or hiking or whatever - if it's warm enough (might well be too cold at night).

Real pants are much better for a decent restaurant and for entering a church. (While local churches don;t usually have guards at the door like the Vatican or San Marco, local parishioners, especially elderly women, are liable to let you know in no uncertain terms if they feel your attire is disrespectful.

Don't get euros at JFK, and don't get them at any exchange booth when you arrive, either. Use your ATM debit card in any bancomat.

Seems like it may be a bit early for shorts anywhere. It's barely May, and they're not really suitable anyway except for sporting activities. Jeans are fine - nicer pants for a good resto or touring museums, churches, etc.

I would bring at least one long sleeve shirt and perhaps a sweater. It's only the beginning of May and Sorrento and Capri might well be damp and cool, especially if it rains.
