Italy to Switzerland
I am travelling from Venice to Zurich on 5th June 2013. I was trying to book train but they do not issue online tickets, instead they want to mail the tickets. I do not want to take the risk of getting my tickets lost in the mail. Will I be able to book the train when I arrive in Rome on 29th May? What other trains operate from Italy to Zurich? I am also considering driving as it might take the whole day as I like driving along country sides. Any suggestions?

Who were you trying to book tickets from? Traveling from Venice to Zurich requires taking a train from Venice to Milan and changing to a train to Zurich. You can buy both these tickets on Trenitalia without having them mailed. The Venice/Milan ticket you will be e-mailed a code and that is all you need (show it on the train to the conductor when they check). The Milan/Zurich portion, you will be mailed a code, but you will be required to pick up the ticket at the self service kiosk in a main station. You can pick it up at the Venice station. You need to allow time in Milan in case your Venice/Milan train is late. You will also want to grab some drinks or food while in Milan and the trip to Zurich is about 4 hours.
Use Trenitalia for booking your tickets. You must use the Italian spelling of cities (they should start to autofill). If any discounts are available for Venice/Milan, they will show up and you just select them. For discounts Milan/Switzerland it's a bit more tricky to find. I'll post directions in a bit.

I can't answer your question about train tickets, but have you looked into flying? Easyjet flies from Venice to Basel. The flight is an hour and the price is about 52ch (not sure how the price compares). Basel is about an hour from Zurich via train.

Easy Jet to Basel is a good idea. Basel to Zurich is about an hour by train and they are frequent (about 32chf).
If the times don't work for some reason, then you can book Trenitalia. For Milan/Zuerich, enter the cities/date/time, select a train and below where the fare selection pops up, select "view other prices and services" and click continue. On this screen under offer, change adult/standard to smart (if clickable) and you should get a price of around 22€ instead of the normal 71€. If it isn't clickable (means the discount is sold out), try smart 2.
