Italy to Greece!
 

We would like to fly from Italy (Tuscany area) to Santorini in September. Can anyone tell me the best way to organize our travel? Do we have to fly to Athens first and then the Island? We are flying because of time restraints.

Yes, you will need to fly to Athens then on to Santorini - you can fly Olympic www.olympicairlines.com or Aegean www.aegeanair.gr to Santorini.

The most challenging part will be to get from Tuscany to an airport where, in a timely manner, you can catch a flight to Athens, and then on to Santorini. I think for Aegean and Olympic Airlines your only choices are either Milan or Rome.

Another option is to fly from Milan nonstop to Mykonos with Easyjet and from there take the ferry to Santorini.

Neos prices seem extremely high - over EUR 300 one way or round trip!

The most economical choice appears to be Eurofly/Meridiana. They fly twice weekly nonstop from Milan Malpensa to Santorini. On September 2nd for example, their cheapest one-way fare is EUR 92.35 all in! Obviously, you need to trek to Malpensa, a long journey if coming all the way from Tuscany...

Alternatively, Aegean/Air One (they codeshare) have a decent daily connection from Rome Fiumicino (FCO) via Athens. "Cheapest" one-way fares are approx. USD 250 all in. Expedia offers these flights and also shows a routing on Air One and Aegean for USD 334 from Bologna (more convenient to Tuscany than FCO), via Naples (the "quickest" route has a tight layover though!) and Athens.

Finally, Olympic has less attractive connections than Aegean from FCO - long daytime layover or overnight in Athens. Their cheapest one way fare is EUR 157 all in.
