Italy/Switzerland - Help w/ Itinerary

Hello!

Looking for some advice on an itinerary for Switzerland/Italy in July. We will have 10 nights after flying into Zurich before departing Milan. We've settled on destinations as the Bernese Oberland (Murren / Wengen), the lakes region (Como / Lugano / Maggiore), and Cinque Terre. Trying to decide how best to divide our time... currently thinking 3-4 nights in the mountains, 3 nights on one of the lakes, 2 nights in CT, and 1-2 in Milan, but would welcome any advice recommendations from experienced travelers here.

We are a 30-year old couple, enjoy hiking & being outdoors. First time in Europe and will be traveling by train. Any suggestions/recommendations?

Thanks!

Depending on your budget, you may be late looking for lodging in most of these places.

I count 11 nights in your plan. For a trip that isn't very long, you've got multiple, long train journeys which each translate to the loss of at least a half-day:

Zurich Airport to Wengen or Murren = 3.5 hours, min. of 3 changes
Wengen or Murren to Lugano = min. 6 hours, min. of 3 changes
Lugano to the Cinque Terre = min. of 4.5 hours, change in Milan
Cinque Terre to Milan = min. of 3 hours

IMO, Lugano makes more sense than Como which would take longer to reach with more connections. I didn't search timetables for Murren/Wengen to Lake Maggiore.

Search here for Swiss trains:

Search here for Italian trains (use Italian spelling):

You can reduce your journey time time (and the train changes) if you go to Stresa instead of Lugano and may be to Zermatt instead of Murren:

Zurich airport - Zermatt: 3 1/2 hrs, 1 train change, trains every hour
Zermatt - Stresa: 2 1/2 to 3 hrs, 1 train change
Stresa - Monterosso (5Terre): 7 1/2 hrs, 2 train changes
