Italy summer trip with Family
 

I'm starting to plan our family (kids 14 & 11) 14 day trip to Italy in July 2007. I was thinking Rome and Venice and maybe add one more stop Florence, Pisa or Pompeii. Any Suggestions?

You can hit Pisa from Florence as it is only about an hour away by train. Also, the main thing to do there is visit the area around the tower which could take as little or long as you prefer.

With 14 days you could definitely do 3 stops. I would suggest Rome for 5-6 nights, then stay in a agriturisimo or villa in Tuscany for 4-5 nights, where you could have a pool to relax and cool off in, then Venice for 3-4 nights. In Tuscany you could do daytrips to Florence and Pisa.

You could possibly do Pompeii as a daytrip from Rome, but I suspect it would be quite hot there.

Our kids love Italy, I'm sure you will have a wonderful trip!!

I am also planning a family trip to Italy in July 2007 (daughters 11 & 17). We have chosen Panicale (in Umbria) and Venice as our destinations.

Venice because...well, Venice speaks for itself! :) As for Panicale, we are not much interested in the agritourism places but wanted a good spot from which to explore Umbria and Tuscany. Staying in a small hilltop town somewhat off the beaten track just suits us to a tee.

I would do something like: Venice - 3-4 night, Florence - 2-3 nights , ROme - 5-6 nights, Sorrento (beach and pompeii) - 2-3 nights

You can take away time from Florence if your kids aren't interested in art museums all that much, or you may want to add, if they are.

We took our kids to Italy when they were 10 & 12. We had 10 days, and it was in March. Rome and Venice were the 2 must-sees, and the kids requested Pisa and Pompeii. I told them to go with 1 of those, since our schedule didn't allow for both. They picked Pompeii, which I wanted to visit as well. It was well worth the visit, although we did it as a day trip from Rome, by car. If we were to do it again, we would have spent the night before in Sorrento instead of Rome. We also spent 1 night each in FLorence and Orvieto. FLorence was to visit a friend so we really didn't do much sight-seeing. We stayed in Orvieto because I thought it would be nice to spend a night in a hilltop, medieval town. We enjoyed that as well.
