Italy- Starting my quest for "best cheese plates" list. Input please. :)
I love cheese plates. All kinds of cheese with fruit jams, olives, crostini, honey, nuts, etc.
I remembered a trip report from nancythenice from 2010 that described a cheese plate that I couldn't wait to try. That restaurant is first on my list!
I just love cheese plates. The best I've had was at Il Chianti in Rome. My mouth waters thinking about it, and it will be the first place I make a reservation at when I get back there! (ALL the food at Il Chianti was terrific, by the way!)
I'm interested in knowing where you had a good/great cheese plate in Italy, as I will be spending a considerable amount of time there..soon.
Thanks!!!

Sarge56,
We love the cheese plate at Da Ugo in Verona. There are 2 versions: one is all cow cheeses, the other is all goat cheeses. Both are spectacular. Da Ugo is a small and excellent restaurant, and the waiter will recommend a wonderful wine to go with. They know their cheeses!
Other things we've liked are the liver and onions if you are into that.
Enjoy!

I just spent a half hour looking for the name of the restaurant in Matera. I didn't find it, but I still might. It's a funkily decorated place with sort of an American theme (tuck and roll upholstery on the banquettes) that serves a delicious complimentary appetizer in a glass jar. Maybe that will ring a bell with someone.
Ordered the cheese plate for my dinner. They couldn't stand it and all stood around looking at me. There was a huge burrata in the middle of the plate. I think this was the best cheese plate I've had in Italy.

ky- I have! Pecorino is my favorite and I have so many bowls of Cacio e Pepe when I'm in Italy, I should've gained 100 lbs by now! (Good thing I always walk so much, I lose 10 lbs every time I go!)
Love the difference in the taste of pecorino at 3 weeks, 6 months and a year. Delicious at every age!

sarge: I wish I knew. The staff and owner gathered around me and stared like I had two heads. I said I only wanted cheese and dessert, and you would have thought that I said that I only wanted fried monkeys.

Not to be negative, but I'm still looking for the best. So thanks for starting this thread.
I'm particularly partial to goat cheese and most restaurants I've tried so far just have parmesean/pecorino type cheeses only...Tuscans don't seem to be big on goat cheese, I guess. I do like the variety of savory jam/jellies they serve with their cheeses though.
